Ok, tonight is the night... BTDT CIO Moms (Especially BF Moms), Please come in!

After MANY sleepless nights... we are going to start CIO tonight. We are going to take the Ferber approach - Thanks TheDivineMrsM for the recommendation! Chat Icon

BTDT Moms, can you please reassure me of a couple of things...

- At 5 months old, can he really go all night without eating?? He is EBF.

- Our nightime routine ends with me BF and he falls asleep at the boob. Can we continue this and just do the sleep training for middle of the night wake-ups? Please say yes, please say yes.

- He won't hate me forever after this... Chat Icon

THANK YOU! Wish us luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My dd is formula fed but yes they can go all night without eating. She's been doing so since about 2 months an she is a happy 11 month now. I did CIO out at 4 months almost 5 months. It was fantastic. I don't know about bf but I do give her a bottle right before bed but she awake when I put her down she's very sleepy but awake

Good luck it's the best thing!

When I did CIO DS was older, but I never changed our go to bed routine. I always fed him a bottle and rocked him until he fell asleep. Then I would put him in his crib asleep and just used CIO for middle of the night wakings.

Worked like a charm!

Breast fed both my babies to sleep and rocked them as well. Only used CIO at night time wakings too and it was torture but worked like a charm.

Both kids are great sleepers at 2 and 4 and never held it against meChat Icon Chat Icon

Best of luck!!!! I did CIO for DS when he was 4 months old because he was still nursing at 1 and 4am....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I weaned him down to 1 MOTN feeding for a couple of months and by 9 months I NEVER stepped foot in his room again until 6am. CIO DOES work! It just won't be easy for a few days. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't do CIO but had read a book about babies and sleep (don't remember which one, I read a few) but it said that how the baby falls asleep is how they will expect to go back to sleep when waking at night so it might be best to BF till sleepy but not fully asleep.good luck!

We did ferber at 7 months but b/c I formed a bad nighttime routine of rocking him completely to sleep. He wouldn't go to sleep on his own. . he didn't know how. So just be careful of having him completely fall asleep on you b/c that's why we ended up having to CIO. I just wouldn't want you to have to do CIO all over again in a month or two. The trick you are trying to teach him is to soothe himself to sleep, so putting him to bed awake is key.

We ferberized at 6 months and it worked! I will be honest - it was PAINFUL for me. I cried the first night and had to go shower the 2nd and 3rd nights so that I wouldn't hear the crying.

He still hugs and kisses me so I assume he doesnt hate me for it.

I agree with keeping the same routine you've always have done.

no Chat Icon but definitely try putting him to bed sleepy and not fully asleep. I just would hate to see you have to do this all over again.

We keep the same bedtime routine: pjs, soft music, feeding, rocking. She sometimes falls asleep on the boob, but I try to put her down when she's dozing. She does this for naps, too.

eta: It WILL be ok. Chat Icon

My DS is 8 months old and I still BF him to sleep most nights. About a month ago we started letting him CIO for night waking and it worked like a charm after 2-3 nights. Even with being BF/rocked to sleep he is still able to fall back asleep later on his own, so don't worry! It can still work!

My DD has been going without the middle of the night feedings since around 2 months. She doesn't STTN but she doesn't have the feeding when she wakes up either.
