ok so first gym class was a bust... need advice.

UPDATE: I called the director and she said there will be 2-3 more kids there next week. One called in sick and two others got their paperwork in today. So, I feel better about it and she assured me it was normal for her to be hesitant the first class. She also said if we do it for 4 weeks and decide it's not for her, she can set us up in a different class or give us a credit for different classes in the future.

________________________________________________________

MIL called and told me that DD cried for most of the class. It's a My Gym class and my MIL said they had tons of activities and he set up a lot of fun things but DD for some reason wasn't into it. She's usually SO incredibly social, nosey, smiling at EVERYONE in restaurants, watching all the kids, etc so i'm so shocked by her reaction to this.

She also said it's just her and another woman with her 1 year old and they were very anti-social. I was hoping it would be a full class, but it's only the 2 of them... I wanted her to be able to interact/watch the other kids too ya know?

The guy running it (who MIL said was great) said it's a common reaction the first time. But WWYD? See if I can get my money back and check out other classes? Wait and see how she does at the 2nd class (which is 2 weeks from now)?

Just NOT what I was expecting to hear... Chat Icon

It takes awhile for some kids to adjust. I would def. give it some more time. Maybe switch the time so that she is in a class with more kids though.

When I first took DS to Gymboree he was very stand offish and unsure. It took him about 2 - 3 times to get used to it and know it was okay to climb, run, jump on everything. He hung by my leg almost the whole time and cried when they took the parachute out.

It would bother me that there was only 1 other child there since you want socialization. I would have her go another week and if it is still only one other child, then I might ask to switch to another day if possible.

Thanks, I think what's bothering me most is that there aren't a lot of other kids that she can interact with. She doesn't go to daycare so I was hoping this class once a week would be good for socialization since she does seem to love other kids. I think I might call to see if we can wait for another class with more kids...

I first took DS when he was 10 months to my gym. he didn't seem interested for a few weeks, I started to wonder if it was worth it. he was tired and cranky ( close to nap time) after a couple weeks he really warmed up to it and started to love it!!!! give it a few more tries and see how she does

I stopped taking DS during the week bc there were not a lot of kids. DH and I took him every saturday it was much more fun bc there are a ton of kids on the weekends.

I wouldn't give up so easily! Other parents might sign up a little later too. Give it a few more times to let her adjust! I'm sure she'll end up loving it Chat Icon

Was the first class not a free trial?

I would personally try some other classes out before making a decision. DS liked gymboree better than my gym. Music Together was also a big hit at that age.

Is there a weekend class you can try? We did a Gymboree class on Saturday and there were about 8 children.

No, it wasn't a free trial. I was sure she would like it so I went for it. It's the only one near MIL's house too... I guess I can try to see if there are any other free classes like at a library or something.

Well, I did it for her and MIL to get out of the house for a little during the week since she watches DD full time.

Can you see if there is a larger class during the week maybe you can switch her too?

On the flip side...I went on Friday and there were SO many children. A few that were visually sick coughing all over DD. I swooped her up and left. No more little gym for me.

i always ask if they have trial classes before i pay for any sessions.
a lot of times they will let you do a free class.

i would go to at least one more class.
plus it is the summer, i am sure many people are on vacation..

I asked and she said they don't do a free trial. It's My Gym but it's a mobile one so they do it at a dance studio near my IL's house.

I'm going to call and ask if there will be more people next time...

DD had the same reaction at her gym class- I spent the entire hour holding her. I just kept going back. She became more and more comfortable with each class.

I started Gymboree with my DS when he was maybe 14 or 15 months. I swear the first 2 or 3 times we went, he never got off my lap. It's normal, she'll get much more comfortable after a couple more sessions!
