OK, I got a good one!
Here goes... Both of my sister's are in deep, deep CC debt. I am talking a lot of money, one more than the other. Anyway, since we are buying a house, I was over my mom's and brought up birthdays (everyone in my family was born August thru October) and suggested that we either drop gifts altogether or set a $20 limit. So, they kind of agree but go on and on about how we should acknowledge birthdays, etc. etc. My response is that I'm not saying ignore, just keep it under control, maybe dinner together and a small gift. I hear from my mother the next day that they are all p.o.'d at me cuz I am trying to be cheap. HELLO!!!! We aren't going to have a lot of extra $$$$ and besides...I'm not head deep in credit card debt!!! Just a little aggravated about the whole thing

Are they 10? When you get older I don't really see a need to spend boat loads of money on gifts?

I tend to agree here. When you are in the position of not having extar money it is hard to explain to a child, but a grown person should know better. Sorry, that is way out of line.

Re: OK, I got a good one!
We just went through a similar excersise in my family....although everyone agreed.
My brother, sister and I always get presents for each other and parents for birthday/anniversary/mother-father's day. It's getting to be a bit much especially with all the little kids in the family.
We agreed that we would keep it small...go out for dinner and just stick to small gifts.

Wow! I don't think I have gotten presents for my brothers or their wives in ages! With 6 neices and a nephew to keep track of for birthdays and Christmas I have my hands full buying gifts!

That's the way I feel. On DH's side we just give to the little kids, nothing for the siblings...it's just too much!

Re: OK, I got a good one!
We always gave gifts between my brother, father and I but we had a situation where my brother and I were both living at home and taking care of my Dad who is handicapped. We did a lot for one another while we all lived under the same roof I'm still giving gifts but it has been toned down a lot.
DH and his sisters have not given each other presents in years since they started having kids 11 years ago.
Now we only give to the 5 nieces and nephews and we keep each gift under $25.

Ug.....we just get gifts for the kids at this point. So you would THINK the kids' parents might remember US since we don't have kids...but no, we get diddly. Whatever...
Your sisters should appreciate a card and your best wishes, and they should give the same.

Re: OK, I got a good one!
I feel for you!
Both sides of our family have a tendency to give BIG gifts for every occassion.
It's gotten more and more out of hand and I would like to pull things back a bit, but then I always feel like I'm being cheap (I know DH and I make more than the rest of the members of our families).
We did start to suggest just a nice dinner out or something, but then someone always breaks those rules and gets someone something extravagant then the rest of us feel like idiots.
I wish adults would act more like adults somtimes!!

Re: OK, I got a good one!
You shoudl explain your financial situation ($ is going to be tight) and tell them that you have to watch how much you spend so you feel $20 and dinner is enough and hope they agree. If they dont, it's too bad for them! They should be agreeing with you since they are in soooo much debt.
Sorry they're giving you a hard time!

Re: OK, I got a good one!
I think a $20 limit is perfectly reasonable. And you're also trying to help your siblings w/their money situation by telling them not to spend so much.
But hey, if they're not willing to go along with it, let them spend big bucks and dig themselves further and further in the hole. You, on the other hand, only spend $20.

Re: OK, I got a good one!
I tried doing this at Christmas a few years ago - suggested that we just buy for the kids. But, I am the only one without kids, so my siblings felt bad not getting me anything. I didn't care and was a full time student with little money, so I just bought for the kids, and they all bought for me. I didn't get any flack for it, though, my brothers just said, "that's fine, but I am still going to get you something."
So now that I am working, we are back to buying for everyone. It is a little out of hand, but no one wants to stop the insanity
