Re: Oil prices???
I just signed up yesterday with General Oil. Our price is variable at $2.949 a gallon with a cap of $3.299, until May 2008 when we can then lock in, hopefully at a lower price by springtime. The service contract was $49.95.
We checked out Patterson, Perillo and Romanelli and General was by far the best deal and my parents have them and have no issues at all.

Re: Oil prices???
I signed up with Romanelli and Sons in Oct for $2.89 a gallon and service contract was around $100. They lock you in for 6-months and then at that time hopefully prices will go down.
That was a selling point for me since I am sure prices in the spring are lower and since we closed on the house in Oct, I did not want to be locked in to renewing with a company every Oct., figured better to do it in May.
They serviced my Boiler yesterday and were there for 4-5 hours, replacing parts, cleaning, etc... They get my vote!

I think Romanelli up currently up to $3.25 a gallon and their service contract was $125.00 when we called last week. You got a good price!

I appreciate that, feels good to think I got a deal on something for once
They also gave us $200 in Oil Coupons, you can use a $20 coupon a month and send it in with your check. I used one of the $20 coupons also for the Service Contract.

Re: Oil prices???
I called on Monday and got the following:
Oil price / Contract price / Company
3.24 / 150 / Petro (12 month lock) 3.14 / 129.95 / Petro (variable) 3.34 / 106.95 / Perillo (variable) 2.99 / 199 or 299 / Slomins (lock) 3.34 / 124.92 / Romanellia (6 month variable with $200. in coupons that can be applied in $20 increments - even to the service contract) 3.34 / no charge / Frank Bros.
They change every day - but I hope this helps!

It may be hearsay but I heard that Slomins can cancel your account at any time also. I don't know what your issue is but I've "heard" other things about them that troubled me.

Re: Oil prices???
I do C.O.D. with a local company in Holbrook (Main Street Fuels). I've used them for years and know the owner. The last delivery I received I paid $3.19. I asked the owner how are companies locking for lower rates when the price is going up every day. He said that companies buy a large amount of oil and store it. That is why you can get a rate that may be less than the going price. However, when that stock runs out and the price has significantly increased, this is where the companies get cute. He told me that large companies usually bill on a 27 - 30 day basis. In the past, even though you may not have paid the previous bill within that time, they still scheduled your next oil delivery. In other words, you could carry over your balance. No more. If you have not paid your balance within that 27 - 30 day time frame, they will call you up, let you know that you have an oil delivery scheduled for the following day, but, will not be delivering the oil unless you pay. If you go over that time frame, they will drop the locked-in contract price and you will pay whatever the going rate is at the time of delivery. It's not just one company doing this, it is all of them. As long as you pay your bill within that time frame, you keep the locked-in rate. Most people don't because it can be alot of money at one time and if they are not aware of what is happening, they lose out.
I have used different large oil companies in the past and don't trust any of them. This is why I deal with a local company that I know well. They will never try to put one over on me. I may pay a little more, but, at least I know I won't be getting screwed.

Re: Oil prices???
In dire need, if a company, no matter how large, did not forecast the change to the price of oil versus their reserves for the winter, that can spell big trouble.
The people who locked in earlier in the year are going to have lower rates but since the company is paying more for the oil than they anticipated, they could run out of capital if the winter proves to be a cold one.
Then they're going to look to save money wherever possible, and that could mean canceling customers. That's where the danger comes in with Slomins. I don't know if they've done it or not, but they could.
Petro is owned by Star Gas who also owns Meenan. Petro had this exact problem less than five years ago and had a stock market plunge that put them in trouble. They laid off hundreds of people including the people who deliver & service. Which meant longer waits and more run-outs.
Knowing what happened to Petro, I would not want to be in the position of being canceled in the middle of the winter. Petro is doing much better now, but they had to make a whole lot of changes to the detriment of their employees and customers. If they had been a company half it's size, it would have been out of business like so many other oil companies in the past few years.
Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to explain why I mentioned what I did about Slomins. Not trying to bad mouth them or Petro.
