Oil Heat
I think we have found a house, but it has oil heat and radiators through out the home. The home is about 1,700 square feet and is 3 stories.
What does it cost to heat a house this large?

it depends on more than just the size of the house. How well its insulated, the age of the burner and much more.

Exactly. My friend's house is roughly the same size as mine - but her burner is older and quite frankly she likes the house warmer than I prefer. I spend about 1800 per year on oil and she spends closer to 3000.

Thanks....so in addition to the oil you have to purchase, what controls the burning of the oil? Is it a furnace? I know, I am a little stupid in this area!

Oil Burner! it depends at what temp you keep the house, if you have a timer to turn it higher/lower when out or sleeping, age of your burner can make it more or less efficient when buring oil. It also depends on how cold it is outside. We keep our blinds open all day cause the sun comes in our front windows for a large part of the day, it helps keep the house warm in the winter without the heat having to kick on!

I have about the same sized house. I keep the temp around 68 during the times we are there. 65 at night when sleeping. I have an older boiler but it's pretty efficient.
I would say it's pretty well insulated but there are parts that get colder than others. The house is 80 years old and not completely renovated.
We spend about $1800-$2000 a year on oil.

We usually spend about $1800 a year also...our home in newly insulated, new windows, 4 year old oil burner, 3 separate heating zones and we have a wood stove. I like to keep the thermostat at 65 but every once in awhile I catch DH sneaking it up to 68 or so.
I'm such a Grinch. LOL.
