Oil, gas, alarms and more!

Ok- so we closed on Friday and Im trying to get accounts set up and I have no idea where I begin!

I already moved LIPA over to our names...

Water is on my to do list for today as well...

We have a gas stove, so I started calling gas companies (begining with Synergy- the company the previous owner had an account with)... Synergy says the previous owner owes money and wants us to pay the balance- which is NOT gonna happen! Not sure where I go from there...

And as far as oil goes; do I just call around for the best prices and take it from there... What are some things Im looking for...???

Lastly; we would like to have an alarm installed- any suggestions on companies...??

Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!!

Re: Oil, gas, alarms and more!

I don't have gas so I can't help with that.

We have Slomin's for alarm and are happy with them. We weren't happy with them for oil though.

We have Swezy for oil and have a lock in rate with a contract. We need a contract because our burner is on the old side. So we didn't want to do COD.

I would also make sure you set up TV sometime soon too because that may take a few days to get an appt.

Congrats!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Oil, gas, alarms and more!

We use Petro for oil - they aren't the cheapest but they have been absolutely the best when it comes to regular service and especially emergency service. Just last week we returned from a trip to find something had failed on our furnace and it was 39 degrees in the house. Called them at 10:30 PM and they said someone would be here no later than 1:00 AM - they showed up in less than an hour and had us up and running in less than 30 minutes. That was the third time we've needed emergency service in 7 years and every time they showed up quicker than the estimated time.

VMS Security is who we use for our alarm - we've been very happy with their service too. Craig, the owner, is very hands-on and always available to answer questions. He's been in the business about 20 years and I find that much better than dealing with a sub-contractor or salesperson for a large company that may not be around next year.

Sending you FM with more info.

LIPA and National grid usually set up your electric and gas together....they have some partnership and when you set up your electric they ask if you want you info sent to NG for your gas. thats what we did... no problems, real quick.

talk to your lawyer about the money owed to synergy - this should be cleared by the previous owner otherwise they will make you jump through hoops for gas

also if your boiler is relatively new you could get by without a contract - but based on the info - they probably have not taken care of things - i would get a contract for maintence and oil - call around - and never hurts to play one against another

We use Keyspan for gas. No oil here so I can't help with that.

I use ADT for alarm. I like that they have more than 1 monitoring station. Slomins only has 1. So if the power goes out to that station, you have no protection. Remember when all the power on LI went out several years ago? ADT was able to transfer all their monitoring to another station so we were still covered.

Re: Oil, gas, alarms and more!

I have Perillo Bros for oil and I love them. Their service is amazing!! We've had problems a few times and had to call for service. Usually they are there within a few hours. Only once did it take a long time for them to come, but there seemed to be all kinds of emergencies that day so it just took time. However, they did not abandon us, and would keep calling to keep us informed about an ETA. They asked us if we wanted to go to the top of the list for the next morning, or if we wanted to stay on the list for the overnight, and since our oil also heats our water, we chose to stay on the list overnight. The guy got there at about 2:30 or 3am, and you could tell he was exhausted and just wanted to go home, but he was still very thorough, and took his time to make sure that everything was perfect before he left. DH, who deals with service calls and contracts a lot for his job, was highly impressed (which is saying a lot).

We started with Slomins for oil and alarm, and had no complaints. We switched to General for oil for the past two years because they were cheaper. We are happy with their service as well.
