Offered Asking Price & Haven't Heard Back-UPDATE
We saw a house on Saturday....made an offer (1 of 5 offers that came in over the 7 days the house has been listed) lower than the asking price...were told by the Real Estate agent that we probably wouldn't hear back from him as the seller is only going to take the highest offer....rethought our offer....called agent on Monday 9 a.m. to offer the asking price (which was risky as we could have been bidding against ourselves!) agent said he would call me back later in the evening to find out more info about our offer (re: percentage down and whatever else!)....Had prequalification paperwork sent to agent on Monday afternoon....still waiting to hear from agent. Is that wierd? Why would he tell me that he was going to call me back Monday and never do so? Is he playing games? Do I call him again?
UPDATE- So DH couldn't wait and called agent last night. We got the house for asking price. Allegedly there was another offer on the table and they were deciding between the two. Very excited but nervous at the same time as we are in the process of selling a co-op (where we have had the last 2 buyers denied). Hoping that timing will work out well and that we will not be stuck paying two mortgages for too long! Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Offered Asking Price & Haven't Heard Back
I think you might be bidding against yourself and the more you call the more you are going to look desperate for the house.
Why would they even take asking if they see you are desperate for the house. They will try to get you to maybe even pay more. KWIM?
Stop calling and wait for their call.

Re: Offered Asking Price & Haven't Heard Back
It sounds like you made an offer through the seller's listing agent. Unfortunately, you don't really have anyone on your side in this situation, because his obligation is to serve the seller's interests, whiich usually means getting the seller the most money.
If there are multiple offers on the house, it may wind up selling for more than asking.
It would be much easier for you if you had your own agent -- even if you didn't get a buyer's agent. If you were working with another agent, he or she could more easily follow up. I always make sure that I present any offers on behalf of a buyer I am working with directly to the seller, when possible. That way, I know that they heard it (and if I cannot do that, I make the listing agent send me written acknowledgment that the offer was submitted to the seller). If he or she felt that the offer was being ignored, he could take it up with the agent, or have his broker take it up with the listing agent's broker, if necessary.
I know there's nothing you can do in this situation now, but if it doesn't work out with this house, definitely try to work with a good real estate agent of your choice instead of going through the listing agent, who doesn't know you at all. There's no downside to you -- you can only benefit from having someone help you through the process.
Also, did you submit your offer in writing? From my perspective, an offer is worthless if it's not in writing and accompanied by a preapproval, attorney info, etc. If I counsel a seller client of mine to take an offer, I want to rest assured that the buyer is serious. So if you didn't do this, then next time I would make sure you submit everything in writing with your preapproval (I know you said you provided it a few days later).
As far as your current situation, I would just call the agent and say that you are curious about the status of your offer. Has the seller made a decision? That's the only way you will know what's going on. The listing agent should inform you of the status of your offer, regardless of who he is working for. Or, you could have someone else call to find out the status of the house you are interested in. If you have another agent call and inquire, the listing office will generally tell them that there is an accepted offer if there is one (whereas they may not be as forthright with a consumer if the house isn't under contract).
