Obsessions
Do you generally find that you are the type of person that gets obsessive over things easily? I'm not talking OCD- where you get obsessive over hand washing, germs, touching something a certain number of times,etc- more like obsessing over an event in your life, something at work, a person, etc.
Lately I have been obsessing over something in my personal life (don't want to get into details of what but it's nothing horrible or earth shattering) and it's driving me insane. If this was a person in fact, I'd be stalking it.
I just find myself consumed with this particular thing and it's becoming bad. Sometimes I can't even focus on work or other things because I'm constantly thinking about it.
I have always been like this...and I really hate that aspect of my personality. The part that over analyzes EVERYTHING ad nassuem.
Anyone else feel like this? Any tips on how you overcome situations like this?

Re: Obsessions
I've always called it infatuation, but I guess it's the same thing. Yes, I do this.
I did it with gardening, growing orchids, owning a house, getting a dog. Today's infatuation is finding the right buffet to match the furniture. And finding cute rubber boots for bad weather that will fit my fat calves.
Really though, when I went to buy or learn about something, I really do go all out.
Do you also find that you multitask a lot and have trouble quieting your mind? I was just talking to Kat about this yesterday, that when I don't have something to think about, I will have a song running through my head ad nauseum because there can't just be... silence.

YES!!! I find myself very scattered... jumping from one task to the next and not focusing. It is SOOOO frustrating.

Re: Obsessions
I'm no help either. I'm always obsessing over something.
The current thing I'm obsessing about is vacation. An hour a day I'm researching, etc and spending another half hour in between 'normal' tasks of we need this, should do that, etc.
I've started obsessing over what I'm going to obsess about once vacation is done.

Re: Obsessions
I think I have been like that my whole life.
My dad calls them "Quests". DH agrees!
I'll decide on something and then drive myself (and everyone around me) crazy talking about it, shopping for it, researching it.
It can be as simple as needing to buy a butter dish for the fridge, or also things like house hunting, getting married, vacations, etc. You name it!

Re: Obsessions
It's so nice to know we're not alone, isn't it? I like obsessing though!
After reading this thread, I decided last night that since we're not buying the new buffet for the kitchen area until after January, I would stop researching. I already have three possibles, I can wait till then to go look at them and measure them. Right?

Re: Obsessions
when my head keeps spinning with something i'm obsessiving over or worrying about i literally get out my journal or a piece of paper, write down every single thing in my head in an attempt to "empty" it and then fold the paper or close the journal and tell myself i won't look at it again until [insert time frame here].
i actually physically use that as a way to get thoughts out of my head.

Re: Obsessions
yes- I get fixated on certains things
it could be work related
or something as simple as a item of clothing I wanted to buy but passed up
it can get annoying at times
normally happens over a clothing item...then I spend weeks trying to find the same thing- when it would have been easier just to buy it in the first place

Re: Obsessions
I'm not usually that way but I'd have to say for the past couple of years I have been.
Drives me crazy. I wish I could erase that part of my brain.

Yes! I have tried to picture all the crazy obsessive thoughts in my mind as on like a blackboard or a whiteboard- then I picture myself just erasing them all with an eraser. I usually do this while trying to to to sleep at night. It usually works.
But the journal or even a blog is a great idea!

Yeah, for me it's like a mission. Usually with shopping or party planning. Right now I'm on a mission to find the perfect bib/statement necklace.
But I usually forget about it for a while and go back to it (unless it is time-sensitive like party planning). I use it as more of a diversion throughout my work day, but I try not to let it interfere with work. More like when I want to give myself a break for a few mins.
