Obsessions - indulge, ignore or divert?
James has become obsessed with lights. If we walk into a room and there's a light, he'll ask over and over and over to turn it on. (I think this is because he now "gets it" when we explain things to him - "you flip the switch and the light comes on").
Obviously if we're not around lights, he's fine, but the second we see one it's "Light? Light? Light? Light? Light? On? On? On? On? On?" Once the light is turned on, he's good to go - even if it's the middle of the day.
What do you do when your toddler obsesses over something? Ignore the behavior, indulge the behavior, or try to divert him with something else and pray that he doesn't have a meltdown?

To me, if he's getting his fix once it's turned on and isn't obsessing over turning it on and off on and off, then it's no big deal. Sounds like he's just curious about it, more than obsessed.
As long as it isn't hurting them or anyone else, I see nothing wrong with indulging a little.

Thanks - yeah, once the light is on, he doesn't mention it again. I think it's probably just his curiosity as he figures things out - DH and I had differing opinions as to how to handle it....

As PP said it's not an obsession. Just curious.
Every time we're in the garage I try to rush DS in the house or else it's "Bubbles! Bubbles! Bubbles!"
I say he's obsessed with that. LOL!
Oh, and he loves our alarm too. I call it the "beep, beep"
We'll be playing and he'll just get up and go "beep, beep"
DH thought he was saying "baby" the other day and said something about my tummy. I told him No, he wants to play with the alarm b/c we listen for the beeps when we get home or b4 we leave. 
ETA - Does James have the Laugh and Learn house? The thing keeps saying "Lights On, Lights Off" when you play with the switch. He may love it

James loves the "buh-bo's" also. He'll stare out into our backyard and pester me to take him out there to do bubbles. When I *do* do them with him, though, he has no interest.

I indulge. Everything seems to be a phase.
Current:
-pushing cars around and saying "Vrrrrommmm"
- bubbles. not blowing them, just dipping the wand in and out
Past:
- Opening and closing doors
- Turning on the bathtub faucet
- Brushing his teeth
- flushing the toilet
- swifter
- remote control
- roomba

Do you have the FP Laugh and Learn house? It has a light switch that he can flip on and off to his hearts content. It is a great toy.

Same here. One week she will be obsessed with getting raisins and the next, wont touch them...lately she is pestering me all the time to "go up"..wants up on the couch with DH and I, then wants down!
