OBGYN/Hosptial Question

did you choose your doc based on the hospital or based on the doc itself?

if you are choosing a certain doc/hospital, why are you choosing them?Chat Icon

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

I have been going to my doc since I was a teenager and it's the same doc my Mom used. That's how I chose them.

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

I am looking to change doctors because we want to deliver at Huntington Hosp for convenience.

My dr that I've been seeing for 16 years just stopped delivering and I'm seeing a new dr in the practice anyway, so I figured it was time to change (also because I live in Fort Salonga and my dr is in Rockville Centre!).

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

I had one hospital I really wanted to deliver at (Stony Brook), because of the best neonatal unit, the new maternity ward with private rooms and bathrooms, and the fact that it is a teaching hospital (I feel like there is more of a system of checks and balances). I chose my doctor from the doctors who deliver there, but I love her and the practice.

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

i have been with my OB for awhile now (at least 3 years) and i'm happy with the practice - so i stuck with my OB regardless of the hospital....it did wind up we are at the hospital with the best NICU in the state -so that makes me feel confident!

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

Hospital first then OB. For DD she had a possible condition that might need surgery at birth so I wanted the best hospital in NY for her condition (Columbia) and they also have the highest NICU which was important to me.

Before that - I wanted a hospital that had a good reputation with the highest level NICU (if god forbid something goes wrong I would never want to be in one hospital when my DC was transferred to another one b.c I didn't chose a hospital that accommodate any issues that might arise). So when I picked an OB I made sure that they delivered at the hospital that I wanted to deliver at.

It's great to have a nice OB or a great room - but honestly when it all comes down to it that doesn't help if the hospital you are delivering at isn't great or can't accommodate you or the baby if there are any unforeseen complications.

Re: OBGYN/Hosptial Question

Doc first, then hospital, although I know that there are some hospitals that would have been too far.

I have only heard good things about St. Peters. I will be delivering there too. I have had to go to their Fetal Medicine dept for some extra ultrasounds and everyone has been very nice. I'll let you know about it after I deliver in April/May. Chat Icon

My aunt delivered at St. Peters twice. She was high risk for both pregnancies (over 40 with the 1st, and over 40 with twins for the second). She had a great experience with them.

To answer the OP's question, I love my OB and while there is a great hospital 5 minutes from me (St. Barnabas), I was not willing to change my Dr. just for the convienence. The hospital where I am delivering is only 15-20 minutes away and just so happens to have an amazing maternal medicine and maternity ward.
