OB Bill?
Has anyone received a separate bill from their OB for delivery/OB charges before they delivered? My insurance only covers 90% of pregnancy/delivery expenses. I’m responsible for up to $1,500 (plus my $200 deductible). I got a bill last night at my 16 week appointment that is due 60 days before my due date for my OB’s expense (10% of the charge they submitted to my insurance that I’m responsible for).
Is it normal to get a separate bill from the OB before you even get to the hospital? I’ll call my insurance to confirm but I want to make sure they deduct what I prepay to my OB from the max $1,500 out of pocket expense. Is this right?
ETA: so i called my insurance-bascially they can bill me in advance seperate from my other delivery bills. My job now is to see if they can hold off submitting the claim until Jan 2013 so that I'm not responsible for 2 deductibles; and in order to get the OB bill included in my OOPM of $1,500 all claims need to be in the same year...

OB Bill?
Yes unfortunately it is normal to get a separate bill from the OB, this just happened to my friend. However, it's a little strange they're making you pay it BEFORE you even give birth. My OB doesn't charge me till the delivery is over and after they already submit it to insurance to see what they pay

Re: OB Bill?
i can understand the separate bill but i can't understand how they could charge you in advance for a birth??!!??!!! What if you changed docs, or had a c/s or who the heck knows. Doesn't make sense to me and I wouldn't go down without a fight

yea-i'm actually thinking about changing to a midwife...I won't pay this bill until the absolute last minute. I'll know by the end of this month if I'm staying with this practice so I may not have to worry about this bill anyway!

Re: OB Bill?
I was with Three Village women's health and they made me pay my deductible up front, now I'm switching to the midwives so I have to wait for Three Village to bill my insurance for the prenatal they've already done, and whatever is left over I'll get back. I'm sure it won't come too quickly tho...so frustrating

Yes I prepaid after my 8-week appointment both pregnancies. First time, though, my deductible was met at the hospital and insurance paid the ob the whole amount so I got a check back at my 6-w pp appointment.

Re: OB Bill?
My plan is a $3,000. deductible THEN I pay 10% for ANOTHER $3,000....... Considering I'm not sure how close I'll get to the $6,000 out of pocket - I'd love to have the bill in advance - so I could transfer more money into the HSA tax free before I go out on leave.
I'm not sure how they could bill you for January though in advance - I could see December because its the same policy period. They have no clue what insurance you'd have in January.
