NYPD calling out sick

Is it true that when they call out sick they cannot leave their house? And if want to leave the house, they have to call in and it's a PIA to do so because you're on hold forever? Are they allowed to leave after their tour times or do they still have to get permission?

Someone was telling me this and it sounds bizarre and frustrating to work for a department like this!

Yes it's true - but only for the time you are supposed to be working.

Oh ok... this person was saying that they can change the rules at anytime and not tell people. So they can also make it that you can't go out after your tour and you wouldn't even know that they changed it?!

tell your friend to try the RANT.(online forum) NYPD MOS' update informaion regarding change to the patrol guide or collective bargining agreement or upcoming promotional tests. some of the informaiton needs to be taken with a grain of salt...but a change as big a calling out sick would be posted there.

the last that we checked the MOS needs to be at home during their tour hours or in route or at the surgeons office.

The RANT is nothing but a bunch of retired complainers. If this person has any questions regarding going sick tell them to call their delegate.. Sick policy was changed in the last contract by the PBA..

Same for NCPD. If you have to go to the doctor you need to call in and give them the address you will be at and then call again when you get home.

You have to call in and out when going to the doctor with address.

Many companies have rules about being out in public when you are supposed to be home sick.

I don't like this.

I'm a believer in not going to work if you have something contagious -- but that doesn't meant you can't run out to the store for meds or to the grocery store to get soup or something.

I feel like this is not cool.

The point is because they don't want people to abuse the sick time policiies. My BIL said they can do this in Suffolk too if sick time becomes excessive (he's SCPD). If you're sick, you just let the appropriate person know and if you have nothing to hide, all is fine.

Re: NYPD calling out sick

No, they can't "just change it".

DH has been home since November 19 - he tore his ACL. He cannot leave the house during his pre-illness tour hours - meaning he can't change his tour suddenly now that he is out sick to accomodate being able to leave the house when he wants.

He can leave the house for dr. appointments, physical therapy, to see the district surgeon, to go the pharmacy - but you have to call in and give the dr.'s name and address, your cell phone and where will you be. You have to call in as soon as you get home. Believe me they document the entire thing of how long you are somewhere.

He did receive special permission to accompany me to my pre & post surgical appoingments as well as being at the hospital for my surgery, but this was a special case in January.

They also, at any point in time, can send a police car to your home, to make sure you are there. If you don't live in the city (if you are NYPD), they can and will call the local precinct you live in and ask for a "drive by" to be done to make sure you are home.

There are also random phone calls as well. Last week DH was at PT and his cell phone rang - the district surgeons' office confirming he was really there.

Other than that, his azz is stuck home.

Yes, before the change, you couldn't leave your house at all except for dr. appts. Now it's just during your tour.
