NYC Hospital ban on Formula
Does anyone know the details on what this formula ban thing is in NYC hospitals?
I plan on breast feeding, but I want the free formula samples just in case I have challenges. Or, I can always give them to friends who are using that brand if I won't use it.
I received a coupon in the mail for Enfamil that says to give it to the nurse at the hospital for a goody bag and free sample.
Since I am delivering in NYC, will I be able to get this free sample?
I tried to research it online but I couldn't find clear information. Hoping a BTDT mommy would be able to clue me in.

It's not a ban on formula you just will not be given all kinds of freebies.
I have birth on LI and didn't get freebies so I would not expect them no matter where you deliver.

You can still formula feed it's not a ban, but I would check the hospital you deliver at about the goody bag. A lot of hospitals are no longer doing those and that's not just in NYC. Also not all hospitals had to give the bags out. I believe the fine print says select hospitals only. When I delivered my DDin MI I got an Enfamil diaper bag with tons of things, but with DS I was given nothing since they stopped doing it. I bf so it didn't matter, but I would check.

NYC Hospital ban on Formula
I had both DSs at the same hospital in NJ and was given ample formula each time for feeding at the hospital.
I received a free "gift" from Similac after DS 1 as well but nothing for DS 2.

There is no "ban" but they din't give you the gift with the coupon you mentioned. They also don't give you as much formula as they used to. With my DD they gave me a diaper bag filled with all kinds of goodies, including bunch of baby formula bottles even though I was BF. this was 5yrs ago. I delivered at NSUH 3 months ago and they barely gave us anything and just one pack of bottled baby formula.

It's not a ban. You just have to ask for it rather then them brining you tons in the bassinet.
And IMO they can say whatever they want about it being to promote BFing, etc- but IMO it's all about cutting costs. BFing doesn't cost them anything. Handing out formula does.

I don't think its a ban either, they are just not willing to give you a lot... well this is what I noticed anyway. I did not deliver in NYC but noticed at the hospital i delivered at, they were really stingy with the formula. I asked the nurse for some more and she said something like, "we are not made of money here" That annoyed me especially after seeing my 16k hospital bill.

Re: NYC Hospital ban on Formula
Which hospital are you delivering at? I delivered at NYU and there was no mention of formula, no formula in sight EVER. I was having trouble with latch and my baby didn't eat for the first 24 hours and I was flipping out. The nurses stayed calm and said that she was fine and didn't need to eat (???). Once I said I wanted to breast feed it almost felt like formula was "banned" from me. I was a basket case for those 24 hours, but in the end I am glad they did what they did. I am still EBF 6 months later.
I'm not sure if you will get freebies in an NYC hospital.

NYC Hospital ban on Formula
When I gave birth at Lenox Hill in Sept we were given only one bottle of formula at a time. The nurses told me they were just limiting how much formula you can get so like the PP said you're not getting freebee formula to take home.

It was the same way in Stony Brook hospital. They gave us limited formula and were not planning on sending us home with any until we asked.

I believe the hospitals do not pay for their formula. The formula companies give it to the hospitals and ask them to hand it out to help ensure that you will purchase their formula for the first year of the child's life.

Re: NYC Hospital ban on Formula
Thanks for the info.
It's hard to find info on the web as most articles were about when Bloomberg first proposed this and there was a lot of backlash.
I am delivering at Downtown Hospital. I just won't expect any freebies. If this baby is late and I am bored, I might just try calling a formula company and see what I can get.
I do hope Breastfeeding works out but for me, it calms my anxiety to have a backup plan. I find it is easier to worry about silly things like this then the important stuff - my real concern is having healthy baby of course, but that is too scary to think about.
I don't expect massive quantities but Similac sent me a full size container in the mail so I was hoping for something similar for Enfamil, etc.
Thanks again

NYC Hospital ban on Formula
I'm delivering at NYHQ in Flushing and I heard they are still giving out formula, I know someone who delivered in June and she got all the formula she needed. I don't think all hospitals in NYC have adopted this new policy.
