NY tap water - sold for only $1.50/bottle

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/la-na-tapwater25-2009feb25,0,1340715.story

Reporting from New York - Two teachers on their lunch break scanned a refrigerated shelf inside a Manhattan coffee shop lined with drink bottles: Naked Juice, Perrier, Smartwater, New York City tap water.

"Tap water?" said Alison Szeli, 26, picking up the clear plastic bottle with orange letters: "Tap'd NY. Purified New York City tap water."

She studied the description: "No glaciers were harmed in making this water." She compared prices: Smartwater cost $1.85. Tap'd NY was 35 cents less.

Szeli and her co-worker went for tap, carrying the bottles to the cash register.

"It's cheaper," Szeli said. "Water is all the same anyway. I just prefer to buy my own water in bottles."

A few feet away, a scruffy-haired 29-year-old in jeans and a striped shirt delivered a shipment of Tap'd NY out of a rented Scion. Craig Zucker, founder of Tap'd NY, stopped unloading long enough to notice the two customers buying his brand. He smiled.

In the five months since he started the company, he has proved his hunch: People are willing to pay for New York City tap water, and not just in monthly utility bills.

I give the man credit, though. If people are willing to pay money for exact same thing they already pay for out of their faucet, then he deserves to make money....

Absolutely.

I must say... Most of the people that I know that grew up in NY & moved out of state miss the NY water the most. If I moved to lets say, Idaho or Montana.. I would definitely pay for NY water.

ITA with this. Now that we're NC, we now greatly miss the water we used to complain about!!!

But it IS kinda strange that he's only selling in NY... Chat Icon

He should sell it to ther states because maybe if they made bagels and other good ny food here with it it might not taste like crap.

Re: NY tap water - sold for only $1.50/bottle

okay, are people THAT lazy that they can't walk to the closest SINK and fill up a cup - that they can probably get for FREE?

obviously this guy is capitalizing on a great idea, since it appears that there are people in NYC who would rather pay $1.50 for water than - *gasp* - turn on the faucet themselves. Chat Icon

That's exactly what I was thinking!
I pay for my Poland Spring... but I can't understand paying extra for something that comes out of my faucet and I could get for free (almost)!

But if you think about it, it's really not a bad idea!

Supply and demand!

He keeps the supply limited until it really takes off and then he goes to town and jacks up the price!!!

Brilliant. The man is freakin' BRILLIANT!!

Re: NY tap water - sold for only $1.50/bottle

Well, it is almost impossible to get some water without paying for it when you're running around in the city. I am sure I have been in the position where I would have paid for NYC tap water, especially if it was cold. I just hope it's not that rusty red stuff that sometimes comes through faucets.

Re: NY tap water - sold for only $1.50/bottle

he really is brilliant, ny tap water is good tasting and pretty good for you, and if you are out running around you can't exactly stop at a tap and get a glassful so now you can buy it, alot of people really do prefer the taste of tap water
