Some of my mom friends have mentioned that perhaps the milk based formulas DS is on is causing his constipation and Nutramigen might help. Ped doesn't think the constipation is cause for concern, but it worries me nonetheless.

Nutramigen?

I never truly heard of switching to nutramigen just for constipation. But its possible the constant constipation can be a sign hes having an issue digesting the milk. How old is lo? How often is he constipated? How long till he finally goes? Is he gassy? Cranky? Crying? Pushing? Grunting? In pain?

It MIGHT just be the iron in the formula you are using now. Maybe try a forumla that has lower amounts of iron. DS was having constipation problems because his forumla has rice startch. I was giving him probiotics once a day and they helped A LOT!!!!

That's my concern.

He's just shy of 4 months. He's been having constipation issues since about 6 weeks, but he would finally go on his own about every 3 days. Now, he doesn't go on his own unless we use a Q-tip. He isn't super gassy, fussy or in pain unless he gets too backed up, at which point we use the Q-tip. Now they are getting harder and he grunts and pushes and I just feel so bad and want him to be comfortable. We have switched to Similac Sensitive, and have tried bicycle legs, warm bath, massage, prune juice, mango nectar, prune concentrate, probiotics and pear juice, all to no avail. He is a super happy baby otherwise.

Similac Sensitive actually made my DS go LESS. They say it is more similar to breast milk where babies can go days without going.
Maybe try Gerber Soothe formula (has probiotics in it) and the gerber probiotic drops? This worked great for DS after 2 days. Now he is regular.

Nutramigen can help with constipation because it has probiotics in it. DS was much more regular once he was on it. That's not the reason we switched him, but seemed to be a happy side effect.

I haven't found anything except a specialty Similac 60/40 that has lower iron. The Gerber Soothe is slightly less than Similac and Enfamil Chat Icon
