Nutramigen?
DD will be 2 wks old tomorrow. I have been trying to BF, but I'm producing next to nothing. We knew from the start that she'd get a combination of breastmilk and formula.
She started out on Similac Advance, but was spitting up frequently. Doc had us try Similac Sensitive and Enfamil Gentlease. DD continued to spit up. Doc switched us to Nutramigen a couple of days back. My question is for those of you who've had similar issues. Did you try a soy based formula before Nutramigen? My friends seemed to have been told to try soy first. Did anyone have luck with soy formula?

Did they test her for a milk protein allergy? I wouldn't try soy. If she has a MPA, she could also have a soy allergy. Try the Nutramigen. Did they say she has reflux? My son had both a MPA and a soy allergy. At 3, he still has the soy allergy. He outgrew the MPA by 15 months.

She wasn't tested for anything. Her pediatrician just has had us trying different formulas. If she truly has a MPA, wouldn't she react to breastmilk if I'm consuming dairy products?

I would have her tested for the allergy. If she does have it, your insurancemay cover it. Mine did

DS wasn't officially diagnosed, but we switched him to alimentum (similar to nutramigen but similac brand) and he did a lot better. The ped's office gave me a note for insurance purposes on request. I don't know about soy though.

She is spitting up a lot for a reason. The test is easy. Just need a poopy diaper. Then you need to rule out reflux. DS went through 5 formulas before we found the right one... Switching formula so many times in a short time can really irritate their bellies.

DS went from Enfamil to Nutramigen. We don't think he has a MPA but the Enfamil just wasn't agreeing with his belly.

I was in the same boat as you with my first DS. I actually stopped nursing and switched to formula. We went from Enfamil to the Sensitive one and finally Nutramigen. It wasn't until he was on the Nutramigen for 3 days that we noticed a huge difference.
I would stick with the Nutramigen. I haven't heard the best things about soy formula... one source (she is a doctor who is on a national breast feeding council and has written books on breast feeding): http://www.drjen4kids.com/myths/mythformula.htm

Soy is kind of an out dated formula - unless you are a vegetarian I would't use it. But you could also try AR -its for spit up

DD just started on Alimentum, which is similar to Nutrimagen, but made by Similac. She is being tested for a MPA bc she is having way too many poops a day for a 10 wk old, and also spits up a lot. While Alimentum smells awful, she's been doing better on it. The doc moved us right from advanced to Alimentum (did not try sensitive or gentlease)

We didnt try soy. We went right to Aliumentum and it worked. The Dr said most babies with milk protein allergy are alergic to soy too.

Def make an appointment with a pediatric GI. My DD tried every formula out there and spit it all up. She had acid reflux and a milk allergy. They will test her poop. We wound up having to get Elecare which is special formula through my insurance. Thank god they covered it. But it was the only thing to help my DD. Good Luck!

I did. My MIL swore that my DH and BIL were on soy and it was a miracle worker for their colic. I was desperate and tried it. Worst thing ever. DD became so constipated I was crying listening to her screams as she tried to poop. It was short lived. The one ped in our practice thought I was crazy for considering it. He said they never recommend soy formula. Nutramigen was a miracle worker for us. Expensive, but you can buy coupons on eBay for it to help.
