Nursing career
Can anyone tell me pros/cons. Education requirements. Average starting salary. I left the finance world to be a sahm and now looking for my next lot in life. I don’t mind a challenge and plan to go to the informational session at sccc next month but looking for real life comments.

Nursing career
My sister is an RN. She went to Nassau and got a liberal arts degree. She then did 2.5 or 3 years at Adelphi. She started last year at ~90K. She works 12 hours shifts at a hospital. You must work a certain number of weekend days per month. Her schedule changes weekly.

My friend went to school for nursing for the same reasons as you. She has a nursing degree but not a BSn but she is a RN. She works for a state hospital so it's 3 12 hour shifts and an additional 8 hour shift every 2 weeks. I think she is in the area or about $70-75k a year. This is her 5th year in a hospital and just moved to the ER. She works weekends and holidays so that is the down side.

I'm pretty sure most places want a BSN for RN's these days. Much of it is very stressful and often physically demanding. It can be rewarding but many patients and more so family members are very disrespectful and unappreciative.

This. I am not a nurse but have worked with many of them and hospitals will not hire anyone without a BSN.
Unless you plan to go for a BSN it is not worth the effort.

I went back to school and became an RN when I was pregnant with my third child.
Worth every bit of the stress of school. I love my career. I actually got an ADN and am going for my BSN little by little. I already had a BA so it was an easier transition.
I work 60 hours every 2 weeks, so 2 shifts one week and three the next. Its been great. I can work Sunday/Monday then have off potentially 9 days in a row without ever taking leave. I'd say the average RN starting salary is 70-85K depending on unit and state you live in.
Cons? Like another poster said, people can at times treat you horribly. I am an Oncology RN and our patients for the most part are amazing but when we get overflow patients it can be draining.
All in all a wonderful career, especially when you have young kids.

I went for my adn and then went immediately for my bachelors. When I graduated the job market was horrible. I work in case management do to the job benefits. I hope to transition to the hospital once my life settles. I took my prerequisites slowly just to see if I liked going back to school.

This is an excellent program. I believe Molloy has one as well.
I have a friend who did an accelerated program. It was ROUGH while she was going through it. She was basically MIA for 15 months, and she had no kids and quit her job to do it.
But, she is working as a nurse in a very prestigious hospital now and feels it was all worth it.

I did an accelerated master’s program when I was in my 20’s while working FT and it sucked and I disnt have a family then. I’m trying to do all my research and figure out timing. I don’t want to go back to work till my youngest is in kindergarten so I have a couple of years but I want to get all my ducks in a row.
