Nursing & Changing Diapers

This is my first question as a mom! DD is a week old today Chat Icon

For those of you nursing, do you do the diaper change before or after you nurse (or both)?

DD falls asleep at the end of nursing very often, so I hate waking her up to change her (she wails when being changed).

Thanks!

Re: Nursing & Changing Diapers

I always changed him before... after a few weeks he started chirping when he pooped so we actually knew when we needed to change him (comes in handy now cause when he chirps and dh doesnt hear it i can go "hun can you change him before i feed him"... dh still hasnt picked up on it)

At first I was doing it before nursing DS.

But he almost always pooped duringChat Icon

So eventually, I started to nurse him on 1 side, change him, then nurse him on the other side. Then I could just lay him down if he was asleep!!

Changing the diaper before also helps to wake them up a little if they you have a sleepy baby!

Even when I changed him before the majority of the time he pooped after too!

She cries every time we change her diaper, so I've been hesistant to change it after I feed her, since she tends to fall asleep at the end of nursing. Is this bad?

Re: Nursing & Changing Diapers

I nurse DD one boob then change diaper then give the other boob. I found that if I changed her before, she would scream and cry to the point where she would have an accident during the changing or right after.. therefore just having to do anothe change. If I did btwn boobs she was calm and relaxed. Plus if she does fall asleep during first boob, the change would wake her up and then she would finish feeding on second boob and then pass out again.. this way she didnt wake up soo soon to be refed.

Re: Nursing & Changing Diapers

I usually change him before. However there are times where I'll have to change him after if he poops.
If he falls asleep before he finishes I change him in the middle to wake him up so he can finish.

Re: Nursing & Changing Diapers

At night, I change him after nursing on one side. Changing him always wakes him up and he needs to nurse more to go back to sleep. He also started nursing for only 10 minutes or so at night, but it doesn't hold him over for very long. By changing him, I can usually get him to nurse more on the other side and hopefully get a longer stretch between feedings.

If he wakes up from a nap and doesn't seem too hungry, I'll change him before the feeding. I usually don't like to change him before feeding him though b/c he usually poops during a feeding. I kind of play it by ear during the day.

Thank you. I'm only nursing one side at a time, so this is where the changing dilemma lies. I guess I coiuld change her mid feeding in this situation too?
