Nuchal test billing

I was told to check with my insurance company prior to having the test done, to make sure it was covered...

So I call, and was told that it was...

Today I get the EOB from my health insurance saying they denied the claim...

"No prior approval/referral obtained within time frame"

No one told me I was going to need a referral... my OB sent me for this test, and there was no mention about a referral...

The office I had the test done in never even mentioned needed a referral either...why would they even see me without one?

The bill is for $518 and I am not paying this...

Anyone else go through something similar?

The health insurance is closed today... so Ill have to wait until Monday to straighten this out...

Sorry- I have Empire ins. and all I had to pay was $18.00 (billed after the test) and a small co-pay the day of.

I had the same thing happen with me with one of the hospital sonos. I was mad ****** and wrote a letter to the insurance company as did the doctor. I got a call back from the insurance company that "they were investigating it and I would hear back if I needed to do anything else/owed anything". Needless to say, I haven't heard back from them so I am guessing I am in the clear. I think it was my 20-week anatomy sono they did this with.

I've since called the insurance company to find out exactly what I am covered for to prevent any "surprises"..........however from talking to other people, I heard not to be "surprised" if after the delivery is all said and done, that I will start receiving "bills" that I have to argue about ;).
