now what do we do?? mini Update

dh was sitting at a light last night and a car was making a left turn and hit another car and (the guy that made the left turn hit dh)
so there is no major damage....the license plate is all bent and part of the front of the truck is cracked
the police came and made a police report but I am not sure what the next step is
do we call our insurance company??do we get the report and call theirs??

called and made a report to the insurance company....they said dh is not at fault so we just have to call their insurance company and deal with them

any time you in an accident of any kind you are supposed to contact your own insurance co. They'll ask you for info from the police report & they'll do the rest. You can take your car to get it fixed if you want, the other persons insurance will pay.

you are MANDATED by nys law to inform your insurance company of any car accident that you are involved in, IF there is a police report made. so in this case, call your insurance company asap.
you aren't going to deal with any insurance company other than your own - it's their job to deal with the other insurances.
i can't tell if the other driver hit your dh's car, and caused dh to hit another car? if so, your dh is going to be found partially at fault.

Call your insurance company first. They may want to look at the car. They may want you to take it to get estimates to get it repaired.

IMO unless it is horribly damaged, I waited to get the check from the other insurance company before getting it repaired. I wasn't going to pay out of pocket for someone elses error.
