Now I'm mad!!
There was just some bioethisist on Anderson Cooper on CNN and basically said that all fertility treatment is a free for all and goes un-checked and that if you show up with money you can get anything you want...all b/c of this 8-baby chick out in CA. It really angers me how little people know about infertility treatments and all it entails. As usual, one bad apple...

Re: Now I'm mad!!
ITA. While the world watches in awe of this woman (who BTW already had 6 kids!!!!) you realize that octuplets are a complication of what we go through and not a goal.
Much as most of us want twins so we don't ever have to do this again, the fact remains that high order multiples are a bad thing. I can't speak for everyone, but I am very well controlled and have risked IUI cancellation when there were lots of follies.
I was sitting in the RE's waiting room the other morning and GMA was interviewing the mother when my RE arrived and walked through. He saw that the near-full waiting room was silent and we were all glued to the tv. When he saw what we were watching he told us all not to get any crazy ideas.

Re: Now I'm mad!!
I really think the media is missing so many facts at this point... but I am glad to see that from what I've heard most people don't think this was 'a normal treatment', so my hope is that it's not giving IF treatments a bad name but rather using it as an example to teach people who are uneducated about IF more about it... Somewhere this girl did something WAYYYY out of the norm - I really don't know what she was thinking. It makes me sad to think how many of us struggle so much for 1, I can't grasp my mind around her having 8.......... it's so irresponsible, unhealthy, dangerous to the little ones, etc...

Re: Now I'm mad!!
my boss asked me about this..he was curious. I told him there is a slim chance that I will even have 1!
I explained the difference and his head was spinning.
I know my head is spinning...I can imagine that the regular public is just blown away by this.

I agree.
It angers me the way they are portraying IVF. This is not what normally happens. Not sure if they stated any update, but a few days ago they said that either she was with an incompetent doctor or she took the drugs herself.

Now that they're reporting that she has six other young children at home (she's in her 30s, single and lives with her parents), I think some the public will see that she did this deliberately and may be mentally ill. Others will see her as a pro-life champion.

Re: Now I'm mad!!
I was in the waiting room at my dr and the news came on with this story and u could tell it was upsetting a lot of people.
My question-----aside from any ethical debate-----if she's unemployed and lives with her parents....how the hell is she paying for this? Let's face it...even with insurance, not everything is covered.

Re: Now I'm mad!!
What made me so mad was the fact that this guy was slamming fertility treatments/doctors and saying it is un-regulated. I know both places I have gone have discussed the possibilities of multiples and one would not even treat us if we were absolutely opposed to selective reduction for high order multiples.
I can't remember if it was this show or another where they actually implied that people might be doing this (high order multiples) on purpose due to the "celebrity" factor, like Jon and Kate.
Clearly both the patient and doctor were off their rockers in this case. I just hate for those that already don't understand what fertility treatment is all about to gte such biased info. It certainly can raise eyebrows in those that already have moral/ethics issue with it all!

I have heard she may have gone to Mexico for treatment...maybe it's cheaper there. I do not believe this was an IVF...I believe it was an IUI with meds, done on a clearly FERTILE woman, which resulted in her litter, yes litter of children.

That's my feeling on it too. Or that she got her hands on follistim or something like that and took it without being monitored. I can't imagine an RE that would out EIGHT embryos in a woman who already has 6 young children, that would be malpractice IMO.
But it's amazing talking to people how little everyone knows about IUI vs IVF. Everyone thinks it's IVF because they don't understand.

I agree with you, I also think it was IUI. This case also bothers the heck out of me.

I agree, my whole family thinks a relative had her daughter as a result of IVF, turns out it was an IUI but even the woman who gave birth things it was "invitro"
