Nothing makes me feel more like a slob than when...
I show up to work in a dress (our xmas party is tonight,) and everyone ooohs and ahhhs and exclaims how terrific I look.
It makes me feel like on every other day, I look like I roll out of bed and arrive half dressed!
Am I the only one who takes a compliment this way?

No, I get like that too. Especially when I wear a new outfit and someone tells me that it makes me look so much thinner. So, I look like an elephant the rest of the time?

i totally know what you mean. if i come to work in a suit or heels because i have to go to Court i get a lot of compliments, but i just think it emphasizes how ratty i must look on "normal" days.

I guess I can see how people could take complimentst that way... but I really doubt they are meant that way.
I'd take a compliment as a compliment -- not as an insult by comparison.

Ha me too, especially if I wear lip gloss. The other day my boss asked my why I was so dressed up, mind you I only wore black pants and a nice sweater. I told him I was going on an interview after work.

I take is as a compliment.. the way I look at it is.. the people who get dressed up everyday always look dressed up even when they try a little bit harder to look nice they look the same bc they get dressed up everyday.
At least when we make an effort to look dressed up.. it works!

If someone says you look nice today I think- does that mean I don't on other days.
Or if they say- I LOVE your new hair cut- I am like- wow I must have looked awful before!
But that is just my own psychosis!

This made me laugh out loud! I am SO like this.
I know I should just take a compliment as a compliment, but I used to be overweight and was always frumpy because of it.
Now I think I get a little sensitive to what people say. I know I should get out of my own head a bit, but you know....

I feel the same way! My friend at works jokes that if I get to many compliments I won't leave me desk from the rest of the day so no one else can see me.

If I give a compliment there's no need to read into it - I don't mean to imply that you look like crap all the days I don't say anything. It's just this time something caught my eye and I said something - it's sincere.

Unless its a back handed compliment, I take it for what is a compliment. But thats cause on a normal day, i wouldnt put as much effort or energy in my appearance. My Dh always tells me "I clean up nicely"

I couldn't have said this better. DH was talking last night about a girl from HS he ran into. we went to the same HS so i know most of the same people. I didn't reconize her name so I asked him to describe what she looked like. so height and weight he says is the same as x. (x is about 5'4 and about 125lbs) but he says you know like x, very tiny. okay- so i say then what do you think of me (5'2 98lbs) he says your regular I have been mad at him since last night over this. he dug his grave even deeper when he proceeded to say they look so young (they are both 30) and I said what do I look like, he said well you look your age, you have that wrinkle on your head
I know guys can't make sense of all this so well, but is he kidding me!!!! We haven't spoken since last night excpet for him to say i didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I don't see why its a big deal

ITA ! One guy in my office always comments on my clothes or my hair when whenever I do anything different....makes me feel like he think i look like crappola every other day
