Not having an insurance card and getting pulled over by a cop
SO i already yelled at DH because he came home from work and told me he got pulled over cause he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. I make sure every single time I get in the car I put my seatbelt on, so many bad things can happen.
So he didn't have his insurance card but before he takes a day off of work to go down to the station he wanted to know if he should just wait because they might tell him he has to go to court because of it. Does anyone know? Do you have to go to court to dismiss this other ticket for no insurance card (b/c we DO have insurance - it was in his other car) Or can you just go down to the station to have the ticket gotten rid of?
TIA!!!

Re: Not having an insurance card and getting pulled over by a cop
you have to get a letter from your insurance co proving that you have insurace on that day
then they normally dismiss it

he will have to plead not guilty and go to court to get it dismissed- not the police station

I have learned from experince they wont take the insurace card
it has to be a letter from the ins co saying you had insurace on that day
they wont take the card alone b/c you could have canceled it- that's why they want the letter

Re: Not having an insurance card and getting pulled over by a cop
I was in an accident and the other guy only had his expired insurance card on him. The cop was able to "phone it in" and confirm on the spot that he is now covered. I figured that's what they all do now?! He gave me the dates of coverage and all I needed. Tell your husband that I was hit from behind in my accident and I can tell that I would have been very badly injured if not for my seatbelt.

I am an insurance agent and we get this all the time! Call your insurance company and they have to get a letter and send it to you and you have to bring it with you to court.
beth is 100% correct!

Yep. It's a letter called something. Certified insurance letter. easy to get and you send it it.
The seatbelt ticket you can't do anything about except go to court and plead it down.

Re: Not having an insurance card and getting pulled over by a cop
This happened to DH in the city a few years ago, I just sent in the ticket marked Not Guilty and a copy of our insurance card.
We got a letter saying the ticket was null and void.

they wont take the card alone b/c you could have canceled it- that's why they want the letter
ITA, based on experience. And, even with the letter, it may not be dismissed in a timely manner. Again, from experience.

Yeah I have no experience with that. My husband was just sitting next to me so I asked him, he only knows what they are told, doesn't work for insurance

I got a ticket for the same thing, and I HAD to go to court with the letter. you cannot plead not guilty on that kind of ticket and send it in it will not work.
Call your insurnace company and get the letter, and take it all down to court or wherever it says on the back of the ticket.

what county did that happen in? I had this happen to me in nassau county and I sent in the letter from my insurance company and plead not guilty and haven't heard anything about it since. I wonder if there is a warrant for my arrest

I was pulled over once & the only ticket I got was for not having my insurance card. The officer told me to get a letter from my insurance company & mail it back with the ticket pleading not guilty. I did & it was dismissed. This was Nassau County.

You might still have to go to court to have it dismissed not just mailing it out.

I got it in Suffolk County... I *Believe* nassau is differnt from what I hear. Suffolk was a pia. I had to go over the the dmv building in hauppauge and wait in a long line to have all everyones tickets heard. thankfully I was near the end of the line and some lady started pulling people off the line for the judge. She asked a bunch of questions, took my stuff gave me a piece of paper that said it was dissmissed and sent me on my way I was having a heart attack standing in the line, because before I went, I had no idea I was going to actually go into the judge!

Re: Not having an insurance card and getting pulled over by a cop
This happened to me too. I'd forgotten to put the new insurance card in the glove compartment before the previous one expired. I was pulled over for speeding. I had to get a typewritten letter from my insurance company for proof of insurance. The letter could not be copied or faxed.
Yes, I had to go to traffic court to take care of the speeding ticket and insurance charge. Luckily I was able to switch scheduled days off that week. The insurance charge was dismissed and I paid the speeding fine. From then on I slowed down a bit!
