Normal?
DS is just 7 months old. At home he is constantly smiling. When we go out, he barely smiles. He interacts, but you really have to work on getting him to smile. He also doesn't really laugh out loud. Developmentally he is still working on sitting, he can do it but needs more practice, he defintely can't sit unattended for more then a few seconds. He is able to push up on his hands and knees, and can army crawl backwards. He is a great eater, sleeps well during the night, not a napper but is pleasant all day. I work in a outpatient child psych clinic and sometimes I get worried that he is so reserved when he's out, he seems to get overstimulated. Do you think this is all normal?

Re: Normal?
Honestly, I think it's all very normal. I can completely understand where you are coming from though. My background is in special education, so I often find myself worrying and overanalyzing what my DD does or doesn't do too.

Sounds normal. DD barely babbled when she was very young and I remember even the ped commenting on how he'd like to hear her voice. At times she was super happy and interacted a lot when out but if there was a lot going on she would get more quiet. She also would get overstimulated around certain family members but that wasn't really her fault and it was so hard to deal with. I think she was just really observing everything for a long time and taking it all in. By 9 months she started saying a lot of words and just never stopped. She's 20 months now and talks in full sentences! You never know what's going on in their little minds but there's so much for them to experience and learn! He sounds like he's doing great!

Normal?
The only thing i would ask the peds about is the sitting up or lack of sitting up. Im not an expert but i thought they start to sit up at 3 months and sit in their bumbo type seats. At least thats when i noticed my dd doing it and a lot of my friends kids. By 6 months she was fully sitting hp on her own for very long stretches.
But im not an expert.
Also there are times my dd observes way more than she interacts. Other times shes speaking blowing kisses and giving high fives. Shes 18 months. And my dd is very sensitive to loud noises. She gets hysterical if theres a sudden loud noise.

Thanks everyone!! I did ask the ped and he said there isn't any reason why he shouldn't be, just needs more practice. I think what the problem is is that he sits, then wants something and goes for it but can't balance at the same time. Also his hands are always in his mouth and he often can't coordinate putting his hand down to brace himself because he's too busy chewing on it...

umm. yeah, take off your therapist hat because you're going to drive yourself crazy lol. (I have to keep reminding myself to be just "mom").

Its hard to just be mom!! He's ok at daycare. At times he gets overstimulated and the teacher will take him into her office for some quiet time, then he's ok.

It sounds totally normal to me. My kids didn't sit up until 7 months but it was tripoding. It took them a while to master sitting up. And guess what? Dd started walking at 9 months, ds at 11! There's a lot of learning at this age. As for the going out, ds is the same. Hes very serious and just studies people . You can message me about all the freak outs we had with ds around that age because he wouldnt answer to his name. Everything has been fine since we figured out what's the right way to address him and get him to respond!

Dd is 9 months and very social loud at home and around people we know. Out she stared at people and gives dirty looks lol. People talk to her and she cries. She's been sitting up for a while and starting to cruise but your s&s sounds normal. Sounds a little shy that's all.
