no 'thank you' for a gift
we sent DH's niece a very generous check for her b-day. I know she got it b/c DH was emailing w/his brother and said if she doesn't get the card by today (her b-day is today), please front her the $$ so she can spend it this weekend.
so she got it on Wednesday and didn't even send us a thank you email. she's 14.
my MIL constantly complains that she never thanks her for gifts that she sends.
I can't even imagine not thanking someone for a gift. when I was younger, my Mom dialed the phone and made me thank the gift giver until it became a habit for me to do it myself.

Re: no 'thank you' for a gift
i think this is a trend of not sending thank you's. i have given several wedding and baby shower gifts and never received a thank you- email, phone or card- over the past year or so... IMO it's very rude.

but I agree that an email thank you for a wedding or shower is just wrong!

I'll add that it's the parents responsibility to enforce this. if she's not doing it, the parents aren't overseeing it.
teenagers are very difficult.

I agree.....on the same hand she's 14 so I would cut her a break, but talk to your IL's. They need to enforce the thank you email or phone call. In this day a nd age of blackberry's, email, home phones, texting and cell phones there is no excuse.

I think it is very rude. I have had certain people NEVER send me a thank you or even say it for that matter!! I have always sent thank you's out and when I was a teenager my parents would make me do it!
