NJ Moms... local day trip

My in-laws are coming in for the day and we are celebrating their anniv. We were thinking of doing something fun with the family everyone could enjoy then go to a nice restaurant to finish celebrating. My boys are the only kids and they're 3 and 5.

Any ideas? Here's what I was thinking...

Aquarium (which one is best. Jenkinsons is closest, but heard it's small)
Already took them to Liberty Science with friends recently so that's out
Turtle Back Zoo, but would it be too cold?

Would love to do Crayola Factory or Philly museum, but I have to consider the in-laws. THey are already coming in from LI so an almost 2 hour drive then to go further seems wrong. Plus, with some of those places you have to go early and my in-laws probably won't be over till 10AMish..

THanks!

In Central NJ, but willing to drive a bit. Just not too far since my IL's are already coming from a long drive.

Re: NJ Moms... local day trip

There's nothing great to do in central nj in the winter!
You'll have to drive a bit to find something.
Please touch museum in Philly, Crayola Museum, Camden Aquarium (kids will get bored easily at Jenkinsons since it is so small and you can't do anything on the boardwalk).
Although, I do think I heard that the brookdale has a please touch kind of place and the jewish museum of Monmouth county has some stuff for kids.

Been to the Monmouth Museum several times. It's cute and a good winter or rainy day activity. Figured with a bunch of adults I want something more we can all enjoy.
Friend emailed me something about "Milk and Cookies" stories. Not sure how that would be with everyone as well.
The area is GREAT Spring to Fall. Sooo much to do. I can't wait to take them back to GA and also try Diggerland, zoos, parks, beach, Holmdel and Sprinker Park, etc.
You think Turtle Back Zoo is too much outside? My parents took the boys in the Fall, but I never went.
I'll look up the Jewish museum as well. Thanks! I forgot we live close.

Im not sure what you guys ended up doing, but Turtle back is nice but a lot of walking. I feel like it is really spread out.
Jenkinson's aquarium is so small. I can't believe they get away with charging as much as they do. It took me longer to find parking and walk there then it did to walk through. I mean we stayed an hour and I really needed to stretch that.

Planning something this weekend with the inlaws. Just don't know what yet. I'd love to do Crayola or Philly museum, but feel bad having them get here then back in the car for another hour. Could be packed too.

Granted it is cold, but I love the Philly zoo ! Eta: there are a number of indoor exhibits so you can limit the outdoor time.

it might be a little far... but World of Wings in Teaneck was fun. the first floor has a butterfly thing you can walk through w the butterflies flying around. the second floor has a big ball pit, a bunch of like little tikes cars the kids can drive, a few things they can climb on, and i think they have a bounce house you can pay a little extra to do... OR if your kids are into trains, maybe NorthLands indoor model train set up?? never been before, but thought it might be kind of neat....

Medieval Times! Didn't even think of that one. Should check if there's a Groupon first.

Glad you had fun. We had a great time and better we didn't need all day. Got there first thing in the AM when it was quiet and stayed till 1. Enough time to have fun and still have the rest of the day.

They sent me an email $20 off adult tickets and $10 off kids, the code is JANEMAIL.

We also go to LSC early and were out by the afternoon. It worked out well.

The morris museum in Morristown has a lego and train exhibition now.

The rvcc planetarium has a magic tree house show this weekend.

Check if there are any plays at the mayo performing arts center.

Re: NJ Moms... local day trip

I live by turtle back zoo so we have an annual membership. While I love it, a lot if things are closed right now. For example, I took my dd the other week and then train, carasol, sting ray feeding, pony rides are all closed for the winter (carasol and sting ray open on weekend). Everything is outside though so keep that in mind so you won't be miserable if it's a particularly frigid day. The plus side is they have an ice rink right next door and mcloones boathouse which would be a really nice place for a meal with a view for the anniversary. The area also has a great family mini golf and just built an amazing playground. Also has swan paddle boats in the warmer months so definitely make the trip at some point!

I also would recommend world of wings but I think that is a pretty long drive. Very nice place and the butterfly release is great. Would be good for your kids ages.

I've been to crayola factory. I wasn't really impressed. It was also super crowded when we went on a weekend but my sil says it's dead during the week.
