Nightmares at 18 months?

So, the bad sleep fairy visited us last night and she NEVER comes to our house. DS is 18 months old and a WONDERFUL sleeper, always has been. Unless he's sick he NEVER wakes in the middle of the night. AND, if he does he puts himself back to sleep within a couple minutes thanks to CIO. Last night he woke up hysterically crying at 2am and WOULD NOT go back to sleep. I finally got up and when I went into his room he was standing up and clung to me when I reached down to pick him up. If I even got near his crib after that he freaked out. Could this have been a nightmare? I THINK he's getting a cold but nothing else going on that I can tell and his nose wasn't running or anything when he got up. I'm so tired and working all day and could just cry... Please help me here understand what this could have been and PLEASE tell me that this ONE night isn't going to start a bad habit of me having to go to him every night when he wakes..... Re: Nightmares at 18 months?

My son went throught this around 19 months. He all of a sudden would wake up once in a while standing up in his crib and screaming....it scared the heck out of us, we weren't used to that....he would grab me and I'd have to rub his back...also, it was like he was still half sleeping when we walked in-it would take him a minute to realize it was us and then he'd calm down.

My mom said that all of us went through this phase around this age too-I think they really start having vivid dreams at this age..

Good news is that its infrequent now!! He went back to sleeping great, but we had a few nights like that between 19-22 months. Good luck!! Chat Icon

Thanks so much! IT's just so hard to be a Mommy and try to always guess what's wrong with him. HOPEFULLY we will get some good sleep tonight because I think we both need it.

You think they could start with night terrors this young? And do they happen every night if that's what it is?

i just did some research the other night because I swore my son was "sleepwalking" even though he doesn't walk...lol. I'll have to look it up again since I have no memory. I'm not sure of the age on night terrors...i think for the most part they start around 5 or 6 but not sure it can be ruled out at 18 months. And no, they don't happen every night. I mean, it could just have been a nightmare too. He's definately not too young for those. Either way, they do tend to grow out of it. But i can imagine how scary it must have been for both of you.
