Nightmare IUI!
I had an IUI two days ago (my fifth) at RSofNY and it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. The past 4 I had were fine! This time, a different doctor performed the IUI and she claimed that she couldn't get it in because of the shape of my uterus so then she had a sono tech give me an ultrasound while she tried a second time. She still couldn't get it in right. She then had me drink 3 full cups of water to fill me bladder and tried again. The combination of the full bladder and the cramping from the IUI was horrible and she was still having trouble. They then had me take Valium and she tried again 45 minutes later and said that she got it in. I was soooooo angry with the whole experience. Now I am wondering if they even did it right the first 4 times or if maybe she just messed up. This whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I am not considering switching RE's.
Would you switch RE's or maybe just see if a different doctor can perform the IUI next time?

Re: Nightmare IUI!
I had 2 IUIs with 2 different Drs in the practice and the first hurt and the 2nd didnt. I think there are soem Drs that just dont know how to do it right. The one Dr I had that didnt hurt was the 2nd time and I even said wow that didnt even hurt this time....he said its all about the angle. I would just say you dont want that Dr anymore

I agree with this - I have had several IUI's there (unfortunately) - some hurt, some didn't. Definitely depends on the doc. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience this time!

Re: Nightmare IUI!
I had 2 iuis, both dr b ( who obviously knows what he's doing). The first was so quick and over in less than a minute. The 2 nd I was so bloated with fluid and he had trouble getting it. I joked that if I can't deal with this pain how will I go through labor. And he remind me if an epi. I jokingly asked for one for the iui.
It could have been bloating and the angle of everything being pushed. If the first ones were pain free I'd give them one more shot.

Re: Nightmare IUI!
i had a pretty horrible experience with one of my IUIs as well (different RE). i seriously think the dr performing it had no clue what she was doing. normally, it was quick and easy, no pain. this dr tried like 3 times and it was painful. finally she had someone else come in to do it and it was fine. i 100% think it's about technique and some dr just don't have it. i made sure NEVER to get that person again. if the other times were fine for you, just make sure this dr doesn't get near you with the cathetor again!

Re: Nightmare IUI!
I would definitely request that a different dr do it next time (if this doesn't work)
I had 7 iui's done at RSofNY Mineola office, and none hurt (i think i had 3 or 4 diff docs do them in total)
i would assume its a combination of how your body is at the time, and the skill of the dr doing the procedure

Re: Nightmare IUI!
I had 2 IUI's and both times I had a very full bladder which helped guide the catheter I believe. I also had the same thing for my IVF transfer. Not sure if it's because of the shape of my uterus. It was uncomfortable b/c i had to pee so badly, and the sonogram was over my belly, but it didn't really hurt. Good Luck!!!

Re: Nightmare IUI!
I have to agree with PP that I too believe that it can be technique. I had 2 IUIs in my OBs office, the 1st one was so painful, the 2nd was not nearly as painful but uncomfortable, then I had 2 more IUIs at RSofNY and I felt nothing with either one. I would def. request to have a different doctor if you have to go another time, but hopefully you won't need it
sorry you had a rough experience
