Night Terrors - Update in 1st Post! 2nd Update - Monday A.M.
I posted a few days ago that Jordan has been waking up at night hysterically crying and it's still been happening, every night this week. I wait for about a minute before going in to see if he stops first, but I do go in because I want to make sure he's didn't throw up or anything (he did that last weekend.) Last night it happened only an hour after he went to sleep. Bedtime routine has not changed although ped said he's cutting a molar and he has a cold. This has not happened previously with teething or being sick though.
Is there anything I can do? I feel so bad for him. When does this stop? Does it stop?
Update - Sat morning - so, I gave him one dose of Motrin last night before bed and he slept through the night. So, I'm thinking it's teething now. Going to experiment and not give him the Motrin tonight and see what happens.
2nd Update - Monday morning - so after sleeping through the night Friday night (gave Motrin) - he woke up Sat night and last night, even though I gave him Motrin both nights Both times, it was just about two hours after he went to sleep, 2.5 hours after Motrin, so I wouldn't think Motrin has worn off. So, either it's REALLY bad teething that's waking him up even with Motrin, or it is night terrors

Re: Night Terrors
Will goes through this while teething sometimes--I think the molars were the worst. I want to say that it lasted a couple weeks, and then it was done as quickly as it started. Did you try Motrin before bed?

Re: Night Terrors
they are horrible... 2 things that helped my DS..... no liquid before bed (peeing may be waking him up) and most importantly, wake him up (not fully wake him) about 1/2 hour after he goes to sleep. i turn on his mobile, reposition him, just so he stirs a bit. night terrors are usually caused from falling into a deep sleep to quickly. they def grow out of it but they are so so so horrible when you are in the heart of it. trying to console him made him worse, i just took him to liv rm and let him flail around... oh also, make sure his room is cool, not above 68.

Re: Night Terrors
Thanks for the advice, ladies. Ang, I had read that link the other day looking for ideas! Beth, I haven't given Motrin or Tylenol yet - ped said only if he kept waking up - which leads me to believe that's it's terrors over teething, idk. I hate the idea of "drugging" him if he doesn't really need it, but not sure if I should try. It's weird - past few night have been 3-4 hours after he went to sleep, last night was 1 hour after he went to sleep.
Pjay, so scared to "wake him" too much - just rouse a little so he stirs? Your DS went right back down? How long did they last for him?

Re: Night Terrors
Did you guys go into them when it happened? Wait to see how long? Like I said, I go in because I don't want him laying there in throw up or something like that and I wouldn't be able to tell if that is the case from the monitor.

Re: Night Terrors
DS has been doing this with teething as well - he started with molars (the top ones were horrible) and now is doing it with eye teeth.
I do go into him - a lot of times, I just need to pat his back and he goes right back down.

I would go into the room to be there to make sure he was safe...more so when he moved to his big boy bed. I learned early on not to touch him or try to wake him in any way. Sometimes I gently shhhhhhhhh from where I am standing or close to him but nothing more.
I have never given tylenol or motrin for this...before or after.

Re: Night Terrors
Aidan has almost the same problem some nights. It will happen 3-5 times a week and then stop for a couple of weeks. I think it is teething with him. It started when he started to cut his molars when he was 1. At 18 months he is cutting all four of them still. On the nights where I don't give him anything, he wakes up. I try to give him tylenol, but that doesn't work as good as Motrin. I know you don't want to give meds, but I think you should try Motrin one night and see what happens...

Yes - I give him Motrin - he starts to do this around the time it should be wearing off.

Re: Night Terrors
Well, as much as I really don't want to medicate, I'm thinking I'll try tonight to see what happens. To me, it seems like if it's teething, he prob won't wake up but if it's night terrors, he prob still would - does that make sense?

If it's teething he'll be more comfortable. If it's night terrors nothing will change..but keep in mind that night terrors don't always happen consecutively. He might not have a problem tonight and that may or may not have to do with the medicine. KWIM?
ETA: Night terrors are where he looks awake but he's non-responsive to your attempt to help him. He will try to fight you if you touch him or talk to him because he's in a state of sleep where his body reacts but his mind does not comprehend what is going on. It's a fight or flight reaction. Is this what happened or was he actually awake?

Ang, from the different descriptions I've read of night terrors, I personally think it is night terrors. I cannot console him. I'm not sure I would say he's unresponsive, but he'll push me away. Doc said though that he is cutting a molar and I know that can be very heavy duty for them.

Re: Night Terrors - Update in 1st Post! 2nd Update - Monday A.M.
My DS starting getting night terrors since about 15-18 months. He is now almsot 3 1/2 and still gets them ocassionally. Things that trigger his night terrors No TV and hour before bed no excessive stimulation he has to pee before bed otherwise night terror like we had last night(he fell asleep while we read him a book and could not be woken up, he woke up at 10 screaming cry unresponsive to us for 45 minutes. When he finally woke up he asked if he could use the bathroom) Also lack of sleep
Hope this helps, our ped says he will out grow them.

How long did they last for him?
just so he stirs (cover him w blanket, reposition him, turn on mobile, whisper i love you or something sweet. ) yes he went back to sleep. they were at their peak last summer at about 19 months.. he rarley gets them anymore (about once evey 2 weeks). they used to occur nightly sometimes a couple a night) INSANE... he is about 2 AND a half now.
ok motrin wasnt solution, now try this
