Newport, RI
Hi! DH and I are thinking about taking a long weekend trip to Newport, but neither of us have ever been. Does anyone have any suggestions on what there is to do, and where to stay?
TIA!

Re: Newport, RI
we were just there on sunday and monday! it was nice, but touristy. theres lots of shops down along the water where you can walk around, some nice restaurants, too. shopping isn't really our thing, so we weren't like super impressed. but it was nice to be away and near the water... there are also the mansions you can tour-- but for one of the mansions it was $18 a person to tour the inside.. i think you can buy a ticket to see a few of them for like $150. its a big sailing area, so i'm sure there are sailing excusions, and maybe some classes you could take, too. hope this helps! we were only there for a night on our way up to boston, so i don't have a ton of info

Re: Newport, RI
Newport is one of my favorite places. Defintely do the mansion tours, they are really interesting. The Topiary Gardens is one of them and that is really great for pictures.
The town itself is perfect for walking around in. Lots of little shops to check out.
One of my favorite restaurants is in Newport, 21 Bowen (on Bowen's Wharf).
Enjoy!

Re: Newport, RI
There is a lot to do in town. The historical society owns many of the mansions and you can buy the 5 mansion pass and visit any 5 you want for about $30/each adult.
Here is a web site explaining the mansions: Newport Mansions
Make sure to take the cliff walk - absolutely beautiful and the sunsets are magical over the ocean! Town restaurants serve fresh seafood and for afforable prices.
