Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
I have a 1 week old DS and was just wondering if I should be starting a schedule right away, or wait for him to be a bit older.
Right now, I feed him when he's hungry (1st few days it was every 2 hours), since I can tell his hunger signs, and he usually naps after nursing. It's just so unpredictable.
When did you start to have a routine or schedule?

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
I started DD on a schedule right when she came home from the hospital (had a C, so it was like her 5th day of life)
Every baby is different, but a schedule worked really well for DD and with our family. Happy to share it if you are interested.

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
I think he's def too young for a schedule. I would continue to feed him on demand.
My DS is 4 months and still unpredictable when it comes to eating. Some days he will go 3 hours some days its only 2. I let him let me know when he is hungry.

This. Every baby is different, as well as what works for every family. We started DS on a schedule right away and it works really well for us. We gave him about a week to adjust and then we started daily routines.
You have to do what works for you and your family.

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
You could definitely try to get on a schedule, but don't let yourself get frustrated, and leave lots of room for adjustments, especially at only 1 weeks old. He's still so little, and will have days where he's eating all the time and then days where he's sleeping all the time.
I think we started to get into a little bit of a routine around 6-8 weeks, where I would feed her and she would nap at roughly the same time every day. Some days were still very unpredictable though, and I just threw the schedule out the window.

Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
we were feeding every 4 ours, she pretty much always fell asleep right after eating... then we switched to every 3 hours because she seemed to get really cranky around the 3 hr mark. We are on a 3-4 hr schedule now.

I'm curious what you did to put your babies on schedules. Would love to hear your experiences.
For me, first it was every 2 hours or so (we had to wake them). then it stretched out to every 3 hours around 6-8 weeks. nights got easier around 10 weeks. hang in there!

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
We''ve always fed and napped on demand and eventually DD worked out her own schedule. And their schedule changes over time too. DD ate frequently the first two weeks or so but eventually went on a every 3 hour schedule and at 7 months she still has a bottle every 3 hours. As for sleeping I suggest reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weisbluth. I feel he really goes into how sleep evolves for babies and how parents can promote better sleep habits.

Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
I started at 6 weeks with the eat, play, sleep routine. Worked great to separate nursing from going to sleep and made it easy to put her down for a nap. Before that, it was whatever she needed, whenever she needed it!

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
I am breastfeeding and there is no way my 5 week old can go on a schedule. When he is hungry he screams in my face. I will try to hold him off with a paci, but when he is ready to eat, he must be fed.

To start, we had a baby nurse, so she helped us a lot with this. I basically would feed DD every 3 hours. I would wake her up from naps if need be, but after a few days she started to get used to the feeding times, and would start waking up naturally. At about 2 weeks old, it was stretched to every 4 hours so she'd have longer naps. Then at 5.5 wks we stopped waking her up for the 3am feed, and she would sleep right through 7am. Most recently, she dropped her 11pm feed at around 16 wks.
DD took to the schedule great. We weren't super rigid, and would be fine feeding her early if she cried for a bottle, but she never seemed to want it ahead of time.

Re: Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
We've had DD on a schedule since she came home from the hospital. She is pretty much also on an eat, play,,sleep routine although sometimes she will fall asleep aft she eats. She is actually like a clock and will get cranky every 3-4 hours to eat.

We tried eat, play, sleep from the get-go but nothing fell into place until 3 mos. At 3 mos she got into more of a routine and was very predictable!

For us a schedule worked. Now at almost 12 weeks DS still doesn't have a nap schedule but he eats every 4-4.5 hours and sleeps 6.5 hours at night. I can deal with the uncertain nap times knowing we're getting a good chunk in at night. If it weren't for starting him on it early I think I would have lost my mind in the beginning... but like others have said, every baby is different and you have to follow their lead.

Newborns and schedules (feeding/sleeping)
My DS was never put on a schedule. He woke when he woke, slept when he was tired and ate every 3 hrs or so. I never woke him for a feeding though.
Because I didn't have him on a schedule we went on with our lives running errends etc and he would sleep or whatever along for the ride.
He finally put himself on a schedule around a 9 months - 1 year.
For us it worked out perfectly. He was happy and so was I.

Thanks for all the input. I'd love a schedule, it feels like this kid just always wants to be on the boob!
