Newborn and eating question
Hi, I have just moved over from the pregnancy board, as my daughter is a little over 1 week old now. She seems to eat about 1 - 1 and 1/2 ounces of formula about every 3 hours, but Pediatrician says she should eat 2-3 ounces every 2-4 hrs. She is tiny, Weights 6pounds 9 ounces...problem is she falls asleep during her feedings and we can't wake her up at all!!! We tried to move her cheeks, change her, undress her, wet her hair/face, etc...please help!! Thanks.

Re: Newborn and eating question
Just keep trying to wake her
If that's what she eats though, and she's gaining weight, I bet your PED will be fine w/it...as long as they're gaining enough weight its good
undressing, blowing gently on her face, tickle her feet

Re: Newborn and eating question
i agree with brownie. Changing her usually did the trick for abby, half way through the feeding. and then she would be awake for the 2nd half.
but like brownie said as long as shes gaining its ok.

Re: Newborn and eating question
We went to the dr. yesterday and she gained 1 ounce, yay...we go back Saturday for another weight check. The dr. said to feed her on demand...so we will continue to do that and see.

Re: Newborn and eating question
I would take a wet washcloth or a cold wipe and swipe her feet and back - that's what would wake her up the best.

Re: Newborn and eating question
DD used to be super sleepy and still is sometimes during feedings. I just kept trying every trick (even if it didn't work the first few times) until one of them kicked in. In my case, changing her mid feed did the trick. Also using a wet wipe on her belly or back gets her going when all else fails!

Re: Newborn and eating question
changing her mid way, blowing in her face and holding her up so her legs stretch out a bit....but unfortunately you can do it all and she may still sleep...congrats & good luck
