New to Pumping - Questions

I just received my breast pump through my insurance and I have a few questions.

It's a Ameda Purely Yours pump.
I have the Lanisoh breast milk bags and it came with 6 collection bottles (no nipples).

1. Do I have to pump into the bottles first and then pour it into the bags for storage? It seems like that is a lot of work/cleaning - the collection bottle- the bag - bottle for feeding?

2. Does anyone know if the Madela bags that say you can pump into them would fit the Ameda pump?

3. What about the Madela bottles with the nipples? I received some Avent Natural and Doc Brown's but should I try the Madela to make it easier? Any reviews?

I don't have an avent pump; I have a medela so I can't answer all ur questions but as for #1- pumping into bot
tle first actually worked better for me bc I would pump into bottle & then keep it in fridge for 4-6 days (that's how long it stays good) & then if it wasn't used in that time I would pour it into the freezer bag & freeze it. I never once pumped straight into a freezer bag & I've been BFing/pumping for almost 9 months.

As far as bottles, I pump into medela bottles but pour into born free bottles when DD is going to get a bottle. I liked the idea that it helps with gas. I was going to use dr browns but I was concerned that skinny tube would be a pain on the butt to clean. Luckily DD liked the born free from the beginning so I never had to switch to a diff bottle but every baby is diff & I've heard of moms who had to go through several brands to find the perfect one that their baby liked. HTH!

Editing on the iPad is hard... I obv meant pain IN the butt, not ON the butt! I did not try to clean any bottles with my butt lol ;)

I can only answer#3, I didn't like the nipples that came with the medela set bc they didn't specify the size. I pump into the medela bottles then pour into the born frees to feed.

Medela does have sizes on their nipples. There are wavy lines on the bottom of the ring. I think 3 lines is slow, 2 medium and 1 fast. Or the other way around.

I also didn't use the Medela nipples/bottles for BM. I used them for water though. I pump into medela bottles and give it to the kids in playtex drop ins

Re: New to Pumping - Questions

I have the purely yours

1. Do I have to pump into the bottles first and then pour it into the bags for storage? It seems like that is a lot of work/cleaning - the collection bottle- the bag - bottle for feeding?

I personally pump into a bottle then pour into the bags. I know Medela has the pump straight into the bags but I never tried it. I also read the reviews that the bags have come off the pump and milk was spilled. So personally I would suggest pumping into a bottle just for peace of mind.

Just know the bags come per-steralized (lansinoh does) so you dont have to wash the bags. If you're pumping you can refrigerate your pump parts and bottle and do a wash at night. I do this at work.

2. Does anyone know if the Madela bags that say you can pump into them would fit the Ameda pump?

Never used the bags

3. What about the Madela bottles with the nipples? I received some Avent Natural and Doc Brown's but should I try the Madela to make it easier? Any reviews?

I use to use the medela bottles with the nipple but it caused a lot of gas for my DD and she was a hard sucker so the nipple would also collapse. When she takes a bottle we use the Playtex Airvent bottles.

Re: New to Pumping - Questions

I pump into the collection bottles and store in them too (now at work, it's easier than a bag). I pour specific amounts in the freezer bags so I can defrost them later in specific increments.

Someone on here posted a pic of her frozen stash in gift bags in the freezer and had the genius idea to freeze them laying flat...takes up MUCH less space!!!

I never pumped right into a bag though, but I have the Lansinoh bags and a medela pump.

I used the medela nipple at first but they collapse easily so I switched to Dr. Browns. DS did well with these (we tried Born Free and Avent) with less leaking and gas.
