New Tattoo Shop in the Hood...

So a new tattoo shop opened up in my neighborhood and I noticed they're not very busy which got me thinking...

How does one find out about the credentials of the artists of a new tattoo shop?

I mean, even though it's close to where I live, I'm pretty sure I'd take a pass on going there since I don't know who works there and what kind of work they do. For that matter I wouldn't even know how long they've been in the biz.

I'm all for supporting local businesses but when dealing with something as permanent as a tattoo, I'm just not so sure I would want to go to a new place. KWIM?

What do you think?

You can google the artists' names and see if they have been published also.

But how can you be sure that what you see is really that person's work?

That's not a bad idea, but I guess would only work if they've been published.

Is it common for a tattoo artist to be published?

Several artists in the NY area have been published. Also there are a couple of online forums so that might come up too. I know that Joe Capobianco and Civ have been published numerous times, so if any of it ended up online then it would show.

So I suppose if they have biz cards, I could take one and look them up...

IDK, I think when the time comes and I'm ready to get another tattoo, I'd go to a more recognized place.

I've seen some of Civ's work, I'm a big fan of all the guys work from Lotus. I've recommended them on a few occasions.

Re: New Tattoo Shop in the Hood...

I think if an artist is credible, he or she will have a following. DH's friend is a well known tattoo artist that just opened his own shop. You have to book him 1-2 months in advance. I think googling is pretty reliable. A lot of people post their work and give credit to the artist.

Re: New Tattoo Shop in the Hood...

Just because they are working in a known shop does not make them a good artist.

I've known Doctors that have gone to Yale and John Hopkins that graduated far from the top of their class. They're still Doctors though.
