new star...but what if home closes after star deadline?
read that star apps are done by end of year...but closing on our new home wont be till jan...does that mean we wont be able to get star exemptions?
help! tyyyy

Yes, you won't get them. You would have to file by the end of 2011 to be exempt from the 2012/2013 school year.

If the former owners have the star exemption, it will carry over to you for the first year (you'll have to reapply next year on your own).
If they don't there's nothing you can do.

right... if they have it, it will carry over and you will get the discount. if they don't have it, you won't get it. just make sure you file your own application by next dec. so you will get it for the following year
eta: if you don't close in time to get it, they don't really care  we closed at the beginning of april last year and couldn't apply for it. it sucks that you will only miss it by a couple of weeks but they won't make any acceptions

Can you have your broker ask them to apply before 12/31 so it carries over for you guys? I'm sure their broker can get them all the forms and such. It's such a simple thing to do. I really don't think it can hurt to ask. I would totally do that for someone.

What township are you living in? Each town has diff. deadline. Some are as late as March 1.
