New Mommy-Breast Feeding Question

Hi everyone! My name is Marissa and I just had my beautiful little girl Laila on 6/1. I have been breastfeeding since birth (except for some points in the hospital when they had to supplement with formula) Well starting yesterday she had been throwing up soon after feeding. When she pulls off I burp her and wait a little and try to see if she takes the other side and most times she doesn't. I will put her down to sleep and soon after she throws up and of course she is hungry again within a half hour. I don't know why she is throwing up! Can anyone offer any advice? I would really appreciate it!

I know with DD at about 2 weeks she started to spit up after I would lay her down to sleep after eating. I ended up having to hold her upright for about 15-20 min. She wouldn't spit up then. Also, now she is 4 months and doesn't really do that anymore and I don't need to hold her upright.

Is it spit up or throw up? There's a difference. Throw up is major vomitting, like she's sick. My guess is that it's spit up. DS did that a lot too. I would def hold her upright like pp said for about 15 min or so after feeding her. She may seem hungry soon after, but my guess is that your supply is still growing so she's demanding BFing more frequently to boost your supply.

Also, keep an eye on the spit up. If she seems uncomfortable b/c of it, tell your doc. It could be reflux. That's what happened to us.

Spitting up is normal, their stomachs are very tiny. My DS (6 weeks) is a happy spitter. Sometimes its a little and sometimes its a lot and feels like the feeding was pointless. Ped said its nothing to worry about if they are gaining weight, which he is. She also said that it looks worse then it really is. You can try mylicon or gripe water and keep DC upright for at least 20 min after each feeding. Annoying in the middle of the night, but necessary. My DS sometimes spits up hours after he eats. I felt the same as you, but I'm over it now...Oh, look for his hands to stretch out and stiffen, then you know something is coming. I cover my DS with a burp cloth and ALWAYS keep a bib on him, except at night when he's swaddled. I also do lots of laundry...GL!!

i agree with the other posters. be sure to keep her upright after feeding. sometimes if DD doesn't burp or isn't upright long enough, she will spit up a bit. if you don't see a difference, i would most definitely tell your pediatrician!

Unless she is exhibiting any signs of pain or discomfort, it may be that she is overeating and expelling the rest. She may just be a happy spitter. Keep an eye on her and don't worry too much! Maybe try keeping her upright after a feeding for a little while.

I also wanted to mention that when we introduced the bottle at 3 weeks, he rarely spits up. But we only give it to him a few times a week right now bc im still out of work. Just make sure she burps with the bottle!

Thank you for the replies. It is only spit up, not throw up. Its not that chunky stuff it looks like pure milk. So from what you all are saying, I am going to keep her sitting up for a bit after feedings.
