New and First RE appintment

Hi, I have been lurking on this board and have already learned so much from all of you. I stopped birth control about 16 months ago and have yet to be pregnant. I am charting, using opks, and all that stuff. Based on charting and opks it seems like I am Oing. When I went to my OBGYN for my yearly in May she said after a year of being off BC you can go to a RE if you want. Since then we have been putting a lot of effort into trying and nothing. I figured I would give it to the new year so here we are.

Questions:
1) How long did it take you to get an appointment with a RE? I was thinking of calling this week. Is it usually months or could it be this cycle?
2) Is there a specific point in your cycle you should see a RE for the first time?
3) Is the first RE appointment just a consultation or do you get an exam as well? What should I expect at a first appointment?
4) Does your DH do a sperm analysis through your RE or is this done with another office?
5) If you love your RE, recommendations please. I am in Plainview. I have looked up a few and I think I want a smaller type office with more personal attention.

Thanks for listening and I appreciate your feedback!!! Chat Icon

Welcome to the board, and I hope your stay is a short one. To answer your questions: 1) From the time I called it took a week or two.
2) I had a consultation first where we went over my history, prior IVF cycles, etc. They took height and weight, and my protocol for my cycle. I then had a follow up with the nurse practioner, then was clear to start(sort of waiting for my medical records from my old RE)
3) Answered in #2
4) DH didn't do it once we switched RE's, but did have one with the original RE(different office).
5) Dr Bradley Trivax at RS of NY in Mineola. Its a pretty busy office, but the wait times are not really bad at all.

Re: New and First RE appintment

1) I was able to get one pretty quickly. With in a week of calling was my consult.

2)If you are able to get an exam then CD3 would be ideal

3) Mine was a consult, we went over my pregnancy loss history, and he explained the Reccurent Loss Panel and what he would be looking for to explain the losses.

4) We didnt do one, but most REs would recommend it.

5) I wouldnt recommend my Dr unless you have a history of losses. Dr Braverman, hes a great Dr but he only takes out of network insurance and it could get costly if you dont have it...

Good luck!!!

Re: New and First RE appintment

Hi,

1) How long did it take you to get an appointment with a RE? I was thinking of calling this week. Is it usually months or could it be this cycle?

I think it depends on the RE. I'll bet the one I used could get you in this week.

2) Is there a specific point in your cycle you should see a RE for the first time?

You could ask when you make your appointment.

3) Is the first RE appointment just a consultation or do you get an exam as well? What should I expect at a first appointment?

I think it depends. Maybe be prepared for an exam in case the RE wants to do it. You could ask when you make the appointment.

4) Does your DH do a sperm analysis through your RE or is this done with another office?

My DH did it though the RE's office. He dropped it off there.

5) If you love your RE, recommendations please. I am in Plainview. I have looked up a few and I think I want a smaller type office with more personal attention.

I used Dr. Gregory Zapantis at his new clinic that he opened up a year ago. It is called New York Reproductive Wellness. It is in Jericho near Ikea and the Broadway Mall. He used to be at East Coast Fertility. He is amazing and the only doctor there since it is his own practice. He calls you with all results and does all exams and you get to know him very well. He has incredible beside manner and is an incredible person. I miss going to him! He gives very personalized attention. Feel free to FM me for more information. I am pregnant now with #2 with him. I used him for # 1 also.

Good luck to you!

Thats really great that you brought Dr. Zapantis up. In my research I put him down on my list for a possibility. It seems like people are saying he gives more personal attention. That is totally what I am looking for. I am already freaked out by the whole process and would like a more intimate experience. My list included him and Dr. Palter at Gold Coast IVF. They both seem to have smaller practices and people seem to like them. Maybe I'll go with Dr. Zapantis since you had such luck! Thanks so much for the info!

Re: New and First RE appintment

First off welcome! I hope your stay here is short.

To answer your questions:

1) How long did it take you to get an appointment with a RE? I was thinking of calling this week. Is it usually months or could it be this cycle?

It took us 4 weeks to get our first consult. We live in an area where there are only two clinics so they get booked up easily.

2) Is there a specific point in your cycle you should see a RE for the first time?

For a consult, it does not really matter. Once you are a patient, it will be easy to get an appointment whenever you want.

3) Is the first RE appointment just a consultation or do you get an exam as well? What should I expect at a first appointment?

I had a consult and then a sono and bloodwork.

4) Does your DH do a sperm analysis through your RE or is this done with another office?

My DH provided a SA for the RE

I just started to see a RE last month and my gyn recommended Dr Palter. So far I have been very happy there... My first appt was a consultation but they started to monitor my cycle that day since I didn't ovulate yet... The staff there is wonderful!

Thanks for the info. He is one of the 2 doctors I am strongly considering. Do you get to see Dr. Palter every time you go there? Is he the only Dr. there? What point in your cycle did you go for your consultation? Thanks and good luck!

I think I went mid-cycle for my first appt... That day I met with Dr Palter for consultation. After that I went weekly for blood and Sono... The nursing staff and technicians take care of that but everything gets reviewed by him. And he is the only dr there.

Re: New and First RE appintment

I am also a patient of Dr. Zapantis. I LOVE him! His office is small but you get to know him as we'll as his staff really well. Makes things easier when calling or when you have an appointment, as they know your protocol.

To answer some of your questions: DH did his analysis at my OBGYN's request (before we sought out Dr. Z.). I made my appointment on CD6 and had a sono and blood that day.

Dr. Palter is my RE & I think he is wonderful. I like that it's a small practice & he is the only doctor. On my first visit he spent almost an hour with me for my consultation reviewing my history and answering my questions. The nurses & receptionists are great too! If you have any specific questions feel free to message me. Good luck!

I wanted to welcome you to the boards, too! PLease don't be afraid to ask questions, and trust me- all of them will be answered here Chat Icon
I agree with all of the above answers, and I wanted to add 2 things:

1: choose a practice where you're seen by the Dr. each time, not just a technician or nurse

2: don't be afraid to switch if your RE isn't working for you, or if your gut tells you it isn't right. SO many of the girls here have switched, and it worked to their advantage. You have to feel comfortable where you're going- it's soo important.

I hope your stay is short! Hope 2013 is your year! Chat Icon

Thank you! I am definitely looking for a RE who I see each time. I don't want to go to a place where I'm always seeing a nurse. Thanks for the info!! Happy New Year!

New and First RE appintment

1) How long did it take you to get an appointment with a RE? I was thinking of calling this week. Is it usually months or could it be this cycle?

I have seen 2 different practices...at NSUH it took me about 2-3 weeks to get a consult with a specific dr. and at RSNY it was within a week

2) Is there a specific point in your cycle you should see a RE for the first time?

I would see them as soon as you can get an appt...you can always come back for CD 3 testing plus your going to have other testing done in the meantime

3) Is the first RE appointment just a consultation or do you get an exam as well? What should I expect at a first appointment?

Expect to have a lot of blood taken and scripts for your DH to have a SA and you will need an HSG...I didnt have an exam at my consult

4) Does your DH do a sperm analysis through your RE or is this done with another office?

Mine was done with my RE

5) If you love your RE, recommendations please. I am in Plainview. I have looked up a few and I think I want a smaller type office with more personal attention.

For more personal attention you may like dr. zapantis but I would have consults with a couple to see which you like the best...I have been a patient at NSUH and RSNY...also consider location and hours since you are going to have a lot of monitoring convenience was def a factor for me...please reemmber that everyone is going to have their own opinion about a dr. and usually if they are successful there they are prob going to recommend them...dont be afraid to ask lots of questions and if you are not happy with your RE switch
