You are completely normal for feeling the way you are, especially because you and DH were not planning on having a baby just yet. I went through very similar feelings. We just got married July of 2005, and had planned to wait two years to have children. JT is just starting out in his career, we don't have a house yet, I am starting a new program at my school, we wanted to travel. But two and a half months after our wedding....SURPRISE! Part of me was really excited to be having a baby and part of me felt like my life was over and that I was completely robbed of my time with my new husband. I actually felt less happy about having a baby most of the time than I did happy about it. I kept feeling like there were so many thigns that I wanted to do, but wouldn't be able to anymore. We had to cancel a trip we planned with our friends, we had to cut back on spending and going out, etc. Of course I was still happy on the one hand because this could be our ONLY chance to have a baby, and it was obviously "meant" to be, but I was just not prepared emotionally for this. But over time, I realized that my life WILL continue to go in the same direction I wanted it to before, but now, I'll have this wonderful new addition to our family to take the journey with.
It is really only in the last month or so that I feel truly excited to have this baby. And I know I should have been feeling like that along because so many people are not as fortunate as my husband and I, but I just couldn't feel it. It just wasn't there. But I've readjusted what my plans for the future are, and I've done that to include my daughter. If anything, it's only put my husband and I on track even more than we thought we were to begin with because now we are really, seriously saving for a house and taking more time to make sure our future is secure.
Just remember that everything happens for a reason, I really believe that.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And you will tooChat Icon There are more people who feel this way than you'd think, and I only found that out when I decided I was sick of hiding how I felt and started talking about it. It's a life changing event....moreso than anything else I can think of. I always thought 9 months was a really short amount of time, but these past 8 months have been such a blessing and I really worked through a lot of things that I needed to with this pregnancy.
You will get your career going in the direction you had planned, and think, you will ALREADY have a baby and won't have to worry about "what if you get pregnant before you have tenure". So, see? Blessing in disguiseChat Icon
