Nervous- Sleeping on Belly!!

DS has started to roll over onto his belly at night. When I try turning him over, he goes right back onto his belly. I'm kinda freakin out about it!! He is 5 months. Do you think this is ok?

If he's rolling around you're not going to be able to stop him from ending up on his belly. As long as he is able to lift his head and roll over he should be fine. Chat Icon

Yes, both my kids slept on their bellies. They kept rolling on to them, my Dr said it was fine as long as their wasnt anything to block their airways such as toys or blankets.

my niece will ONLY sleep on her belly!!! she literally sleeps with her butt in the air and her face to the side on the mattress....

it freaked me out and my SIL told me - she moves her - she goes RIGHT back...(she's 6 months)

Re: Nervous- Sleeping on Belly!!

My DS has been doing this for the past month or so. I hate it, but I learned there is nothing I can do about it. He is able to lift his head up good, and can roll from side to side. He always puts his head to the side, but it still scares me. I have a video monitor and I swear everytime I check it through the night, he is in a different postion.

I just went in 10 minutes ago to turn him back onto his back and I just noticed he is back on his belly. I give up!

Re: Nervous- Sleeping on Belly!!

DD has been doing it for like a month and now pretty much only sleeps on her belly. I still check on her in the video monitor A LOT, but I have gotten better about going into her room to feel her back (to make sure she is breathing). I NEVER thought I would ne so narotic about the sleeping thing and be "one of those moms" that check to make sure she is breathing, but it freaks me out!!!!

Re: Nervous- Sleeping on Belly!!

My son just started doing this too (he will be 5 months on the 8th). I was lucky though, he started the night before I had a Ped appointment.

I got less sleep that night than I did the night we brought him home from the hospital. I actally slept on the floor next to his crib, I was so worriedChat Icon.

His DR said that-if he keeps putting himself in that position (up on his knees, face buried into the mattress) there is not much you can do. If he can lift his head and roll to his side, he is fine.

He also said that they it is his responsibility to inform us about SIDS but not to get too crazy to the point that you are not sleeping. He said remember that we were all on our bellies from the get go. I was shocked that he said that but he did make me feel better.

Re: Nervous- Sleeping on Belly!!

I think as long as your dc is able to turn over both ways (front to back, back to front), belly sleeping is okay. Gianna started belly sleeping a while ago, and when I would try to put her on her back, she'd end up on her belly again. She, as a pp mentioned, sleeps belly down, butt in the air and face smushed into the mattress. So cute!

I was a nervous wreck when she did this the first time, too. Chat Icon
