neocate vs elecare-update
hello ladies...i haven't posted here yet but wanted to get your opinions. my dc is 4.5 months and has been dx'd with reflux and a possible milk allergy. she was recently started on neocate 2 weeks ago and HATES it. screams, pushes it away and does NOT want to drink it. today she drank 14 oz where usually she was close to 30 on her prior formula. i'm really worried about her intake. the GI said we could possibly try elecare and maybe she would like it better. has anyone had this problem? has anyone found their dc liked one better than the other? thanks in advance ladies...i'm at such a loss at what to do here, and its heartbreaking that i know she is hungry but doesn't want to drink the neocate :(
Update: spoke with gi today. He recommended I try elecare first and see if she took it any better. Also changed her reflux Meds and recommending trying rice cereal in the bottle. Had a can of elecare so went and picked up the sample. She only drank 3 oz. I will give it a chance but really don't know if it will be any better. He said we could always trial her on a similac sensitive or gentle ease. But don't know how she would take to those either and hate to keep changing formulas. Thanks for the advice.

neocate vs elecare
I dont have anything to compare it to, but my son is on elecare and loves his formula. I just find that he is always hungry, more than his twin.

Re: neocate vs elecare
We haven't tried Elecare, but DD's intake has been terrible on Neocate for months.

Re: neocate vs elecare
DD was on Elecare and hated it. I never tried Neocate nor did the GI or ped suggest it. I wish I would have though, to see if she liked it better. Can't hurt to try it out. Her formula intake was horrible (like bare minimum) on Elecare so we started solids at 4 months, which she loved.

Re: neocate vs elecare
I have nothing to compare it to, but my dd took to the neocate right away. Granted, she is a light eater (8 weeks and only about 15 oz in a 24-hr period) but I don't think that's from the taste. Her poops are awful though!

neocate vs elecare
Today she has only drank 10 oz.... Does anyone know where to find one care of elecare? My doc had no samples and the website says you need to order 6! Honestly I am debating just putting her back on nutramigen. At least she ate that! Maybe try rtf instead of powder?

Re: neocate vs elecare
i know my sister gets the elecare for my nephew via a prescription through the pharmacy... maybe this is something you can try? otherwise I would try the RTF of nutriagmen if you feel like she did better on it, I know with DS I could not give him powder (he is on Alimentum though).

Re: neocate vs elecare
Both are thin and taste horrible! My son was on Elecare until he was 15 months old. 2-3 oz every 2-3 hours for the first 3-4 months.. Then he went up to 5-6 oz... It won't hurt to try Elecare..

Re: neocate vs elecare
DS was on Elecare for about 8-9 months. Longest 8-9 months of my life. It was vile, he hated it, he would barely drink it. The GI actually had us put Splenda in it to help the taste.

Re: neocate vs elecare
I think they make flavored neocate and elecare (like vanilla and chocolate). My DS is on neocate Jr. (for 1 and up and we get it flavored so I am assuming the infant formula comes this way too.

Re: neocate vs elecare
No flavored one for the infant unfortunately. I have a call into her gastro this morning to see what he thinks. Yesterday she drank 13 oz and I had to give her a dream feed which she thankfully took which bought her up to 18oz. Still not nearly enough though:(. Also she's been spitting up a lot on it too.

I have two unopened cans of elecare DHA if you want them. I am in suffolk county too. PM if you want them. I had my twins on elecare.
FYI Initially our insurance wouldn't cover it (BCBS) but the elecare rep and the babies gastro dr. had me fill out a form saying that it is MEDICAL food and not just formula, as in it's a required diet. So we submitted a formal complaint to the insurance company and they ended up paying for it for the first year. It was pretty awesome not having to pay for formula the first year. They are still sensitive to diary and after formula we had to switch to lactaid. So if your insurance rejects the claim have the doctor and reps help go to bat for you. It will save you lots of money.

My dd had reflux and milk intolerance never tested pos for allergy. She was on alimentum and zantac. I weaned her instead of just straight changing it due to the difference in taste. I would put 1 oz of alimentum to 4 oz of reg formula for 2 days and then up the alimentum every 2 days until it wad all alimentum. She was also put on zantac. Within a few days i noticed a difference and within 1 week a brand new baby.
My peds always recommends rtf before powder. The powder does have a different taste and is more watered down.i also found rtf easier to deal with.
