Need to know everything you know

DH and I are looking into buying a house in LI....We are both from brooklyn and need help understand some of the areas...If anyone can give me an idea of whats up with these areas that would be great.

Background: i am 26 and dh is 29. No kids yet but maybe next year. we have a small dog. I love little stores over some of the big box stores. We love to go out to eat and go to bars . I would love a neighborhood where I can hang with my neighbors. We both need to commute to the city for work especially me bc a few days a month i have to be at work at 530am.

bellmore, merrick, wantagh, seaford, levittown, massapequa

Re: Need to know everything you know

they're all good towns with good schools..levittown will be the most affordable, and i would avoid parts of massapequa that border amityville

i used to work in bellmore-merrick, which was very nice

we actually just bought our first home in seaford, and we love it

just be aware that in bellmore, merrick, wantagh, and seaford your water bill will be much, much higher than in levittown or massapequa

Why would the water bill be higher??

What do you love about seaford?

Re: Need to know everything you know

it's a different water company..it was aqua but they were recently bought out

seaford's a small town, which i love, everyone is very family oriented, and it seems like people who live there want to stay there when they grow up-which is very different from where i grew up where people move out most of the time

the school scores very well, and offers a lot of problems

we're close to the train and the parkway, so it's very convenient for us

the homes are all very well kept, and people take pride in the town itself

we've been here for 3 months or so, and we love it more and more every day

Re: Need to know everything you know

all of those towns you mentioned are nice. i'm from seaford as well, yes the water bill does stink seeing that as some people only pay $40 quarterly! for some reason we have to use a private company for water (what used to be Aqua NY).... our water bill is higher over the summer especially when we use our sprinkler system, the bill comes every 60 days or so, i want to say its well over 100 in the summer months... but it is a nice town, convenient to the train and highways... the only thing that stinks is that there is lack of commercial property, so the property taxes are high. Last year my taxes went up A LOT (also had to do with the fact that the school district adopted an 8% increase in budget). But you can find other school districts that have more commercial property and therefore lower taxes than other areas.. I remember when I was first looking at houses, I noticed Island Trees (parts of levittown and other areas) and Bethpage had lower taxes, I guess because of the commercial property around the areas. But look around and do your research, good luck!

Re: Need to know everything you know

Just wanted to add that I live in Levittown and my Water Company is Aqua. I pay about $30 every two months and in the summer it is a little higher because of watering the lawn.

Long Beach is an awesome place. House prices are definitely $$$ because it's on the beach but a great place to raise a family. Lots of small stores, tons of restaurants, big bar scene. Def out of the way which is both good and bad. 50 minute train ride to Penn.

Based upon this part of your description, i'd look at Rockville Centre.
When i moved from Brooklyn to RVC, i chose it precisely because of these reasons above. I wanted someplace to go out to bars that wasn't the city, and where I wouldn't have to drive. There's a TON of bars and restaurants all within walking distance of each other.
Only problem is, RVC is pretty expensive to buy a home in. Don't know what your price range/income is, so it might be affordable for you. But RVC taxes are higher than other locations because its an incorporated village. Upside is they have their own power plant, so your electric is always reasonable.
When it came time for DH and i buy a house, we couldn't afford to stay in RVC so moved to Baldwin instead for a lot less $$, where we got a beautiful house and can still take advantage of all that RVC has to offer

good luck!
