Need some serious decorating/furniture arranging help!!!
OK I'm desperate. I can't do this alone, I have zero decorating skills!! We just added on a family room and we're going to be buying furniture for that room. But my biggest issue is the original family room, I can't figure out how to arrange the furniture in there! There is basically no wall space and it's really driving me nuts. Right now it's a mish mosh of chairs, the couch is in the new room for now (until we get new stuff). I don't know what to do with that empty space. ANY help would be appreciated!!!
Here is the room:
Here's the "new room" with the couch that's going back to the other room:
Looking from the new room through the dining room into the original room:

First they are both very nice rooms. Your new room is gorgeous. I can picture a nice large sectional in that room with a large area rug to start the room.
For your old room, I would get rid of the one burgandy looking chair. Take the two other chair and place them in front of the fireplace. Move the coffee table into the other room for now. I think this room would be nice just as a sitting room or maybe a playroom if that is something you need. You could really turn that into a great play room. Buy some cube furniture for storage for toys, maybe paint the cabinets white that are next to the fireplace.
Then when you have to put the old couch back, I would put the couch in front of the fireplace with those two chairs on each side of the couch angled towards the fireplace. If there is room for the coffee table, then put that back too.

What will you be using each room for? Is one a formal LR and the other more a family/play room. Do you need anything specific in each room?

Thanks! For the new room I am planning on getting either a sectional or a couch and love seat and putting it along the big wall (not under the windows like the couch is there now). I'm thinking the TV will go in the corner.
In the big room, both recliners are going out. They are just here until we can afford some new stuff (hopefully soon!). I'm thinking of getting some new chairs for the room to go with the old couch and get a new area rug. The coffee table will probably stay in the new room with the new couches and I'm thinking of getting a smaller round one for in front of the fireplace. Oh and I can't paint the built-ins. DH made them and would freak out if I did!! Although I do think it would look better... maybe a project down the road!!

Well I'm honestly not sure. The new room was going to be a casual LR/playroom. But we spend a lot of time in the old room because of it's location and we use the fireplace a lot in the winter. So I supposed the old room is the more "formal" room and the new room is going to be more of a family room. I plan to keep most of DS's toys in the new room. But I'm open to any ideas, this is pretty much a blank slate right now!!

They are gorgeous rooms! Can you mount the TV on the fireplace? I don't like how it's in the corner.

We thought about it, but I'm not sure how we would mount it to the fireplace since it's all brick

Re: Need some serious decorating/furniture arranging help!!!
i would mount the tv in the nook its front of if you can. you said you use the fireplace a lot, so you probably shouldn't mount it above it. also, you would be putting holes in that nice stone. if down the road you don't want a tv in there, you now have holes to deal with.
I would use the new room as more of a family room/play room. 2 reasons.
1.this rooms location. it seems to be seen from other rooms in the house. I like neat and clean spaces so it would annoy me to see toys out all the time from other areas of the house
2. fireplaces in a playroom are never that safe. even when not in use, you still have to have it blocked off so small children don't get hurt falling into the brick etc.
I love your idea of getting 2 chairs and placing them in from of the fireplace. but is that enough seating for you if you use it alot? if not I would get to loveseats and put on each side of the fireplace so that you can see the fireplace from the dining room. if 2 chairs are enough i would stick with them then. the sides of your room will look empiter then, but you can fill in with planters or large vases.

Are you talking about the wall to the left of the bookcase? It's already mounted to the back of the nook (in the photo it's pulled out on it's arm, but it can be pushed all the way back into the case, I'll try and get a picture of it like that later).
As for the chairs, if I did the chairs idea I would also have the couch in there so there would be enough seating. I don't know if I'd do 2 chairs or 4? And then I'm still left with that big space in the back of the room.
The fireplace is a PITA with a child. But we usually don't light it until he is going to bed and he is pretty good about staying out of it. In general though it's not really a good "playroom" so the new room would def. be better for that.
Thanks for your input

Re: Need some serious decorating/furniture arranging help!!!
to add to HeatherRoses post, you could also add thin console table to one area of the fireplace room. Where you feel it's empty feeling.
And if you are bringing back the couch, you could put the couch on the right side of the fireplace facing your kitchen. If you don't keep any of the chairs that are in the room now, I would buy two club chairs or two slipper chairs on the left side of the fireplace. Maybe a small round table in between the two chairs. And a nice ottoman as your coffee table/ottoman. Now that would be a cozy fireplace room in my opinion.
And since your DH built those built-ins, I wouldn't touch them either.
Your new room, I would love a sectional like I said before. The room looks big enough to put the sectional away from the walls and have space to walk around the sectional behind it. You would have console tables or sofa tables or thin cabinets that are low like whatever couch you pick and you could use all of that for storage for your child(s) toys. If they were open tables, I would use baskets underneath so there is easy access for the toys but it would look neat still when they are all put away.

Well I actually did try it with the couch along the right side of the fireplace, but with the 2 big chairs it didn't work. But I think if I got 2 smaller chairs and pulled the couch in a little bit (and maybe put a table behind it?) it would work better? What would I put on the wall behind the 2 chairs?
Here's a pic from last Christmas with the couch along the one side (built-in wasn't finished and the wreath is the same ):

I really like this. This is exactly what I was talking about. What is wrong with it this way. It suites the room well I think. Maybe smaller club chairs would work better. Just something that is a smaller scale.

I love a sectional like this, but for your new room not the old room with the fireplace. See how you have room to walk around. You could have cabinets or open book shelves behind the sectional all around and have basket it them for toys. A sectional is always a great couch of a nice size Family Room.

IMAGE Love this arrangement also. Very pretty. Maybe you can get a LazyBoy recliner that looks like a chair. Maybe he would be ok with that. He would still be comfortable. GL with that.
