Need some insight
Hi Girls,
Guess I should give some background first. So we conceived our DD in 2008 on our first IUI, no Clomid, just Metformin. Guess we got lucky! We went back to the RE in 2010 to TTC #2 and we we had ALL Clomid and Met cycles..........4 failed, 3 I got BFP's but they all ended in miscarriage. We were about to start IVF but found out our IF coverage was exhausted............which brings us to today.
We found out this morning that we were approved for the IVF grant but our cost share is $6K.............way more than we expected. Honestly, with all of our debt and expenses we're nervous to lay out that kind of money on the chance the IVF doesn't work. So we're considering doing just another IUI cycle which would only cost us about $1K. But here is my question..............
Dr. San Roman mentioned doing an IUI cycle with injectibles instead of just Clomid and I was wondering what your experiences were with the injectibles and IUI. Did you produce more eggs? Did you get BFP's? I am just wondering if my chances of conceiving will increase with the injectibles over just the Clomid. Also, what are the injections like? Easy?
Anyway, thanks for reading if you got this far! Any insight is appreciated.

Re: Need some insight
I'm glad to see you will be giving it another go soon!!!
My experience with injectable IUIs has been pretty easy.. The needle is THIN and I never experienced any issues. I can't compare the number of follies I made with injectables vs. without, because I never produced anything without them. All of my IUIs were with injectables. Did you ever use a trigger shot for your IUIs? Follistim and gonal is even easier than the because the needle is smaller (from what I remember)
Honestly.. here's my non-doctor opinion... You were able to get pregnant on basically half of your IUI attempts. Since you were able to get pregnant, I don't see how injectables could really make a big difference.. My thought is that you need to manage how to STAY pregnant. Does he have any reasoning for why those pregnancies didn't last? Did you ever have any of the thrombo or immune tests done?
Again.. not a doctor of course, but that's my two cents! I'm so excited to see you here and hope that it's not long before we're both on the pregnancy board!! (or something like that.. since I'll be living vicariously through my surrogate!)

Re: Need some insight
Thanks!! I am so excited too!!!!!
For all my IUI's I did the hcG shot. I'm not a stranger to needles either since I had GD with my DD. I had to take insulin shots 4X/day. I'm thinking he wants to do the injectables because I was on a pretty high dose of Clomid and since we're only going to try 1 or 2 IUI's (since we're paying for it) maybe the hope is that the injectables will produce better and more follies without having to play around with the Clomid dosages and wasting time.
As for the 3 miscarriages, yes, we're looking into why I had issues with sustaining those pregnancies. I just had a ton of blood work done, they took like 20 viles of blood so I'm guessing they are testing for the issues you mentioned. I specifically asked for the recurrent miscarriage panel because if there is some simple reason why I had issues that can easily be corrected then I want to know before we do the IUI. I will hopefully have those results back at the end of the week. One of the miscarriages was a chemical, I literally started bleeding like a day or two after I got my BFP. One was ectopic, it just implanted wrong and the last miscarriage I just had improperly rising betas. The baby wasn't developing either. I'm hoping that was all just a bad fluke and we get lucky again like with my DD.
I'm SO excited for you too!!! I hope that we both have some good news soon!!!! It will be wonderful to share in the excitement together over the next few months. You've been through SO much, I am praying you get your little miracle this year!!!!

That is nuts!!!!! I have no idea how the meds will work. Technically we have zero IF coverage left so we are paying out of pocket for the IUI. Called a global IUI, its suppose to be all inclusive but I am not sure if the meds are a separate cost. I will have to find out. This is all such a pain, stupid lousy insurance companies.

Re: Need some insight
Oh it just keeps getting more annoying!!!!!!!! Called my insurance company and of course, they don't cover ANY injectable fertility meds!! I'm guessing the Global IUI does not cover meds in which case I am looking at an added expense now on top of the IUI cost!!! I just cannot take it!!
I don't understand why insurance companies treat TTC as a luxury. You wouldn't deny a heart patient their meds or a someone with high blood pressure treatment but yet wanting a baby and having medical issues that prevent is not considered valued or important. It makes me so upset. I'm just so, so annoyed!!!!

Re: Need some insight
Sometimes there are donated Meds from your RE or from the ladies on the board too. Check with the grant to see what is covered, ask you Dr. what you may need when you do your cycle, call Freedom Pharmacy because they have cheaper prices and then check with us!!
