Re: need some ideas
I switch things up as far as a centerpiece in my dining room.
I have a nice Waterford crystal bowl... sometimes I have that as a centerpiece (with candlesticks on either side), and sometimes I fill it with seasonal items (pine cones in fall, small Christmas balls during holidays, etc.). I also have a nice ceramic pedestal bowl from Williams-Sonoma that I sometimes fill with colorful fruit -- apples, clementines, etc.). I also have seasonal floral centerpieces that I've gotten at places like Michael's or AC Moore.
As far as the ledge, what about displaying vases, or decorative bottles or something like that. I've seen collections of milk glass items (like little pitchers and sugar bowls) or even cool wine bottles (if it's wide enough). I guess it kind of depends on your style and what look you are going for in the dining room (very formal, more shabby chic, etc.).

Candlesticks, florals, vases, pottery, or hurricane lamps will look nice on ledge. Dining table looks beautiful with a candelabra on each side of the centerpiece (florals, toureens, crystal bowls, anything from Intrada of Italy, even a bowl full of apples or lemons can be beautiful)...
