need some advice re 10 mo old and vomiting (minor tmi alert)

Sorry in advance for the length of this. I just don't know what to do and the ped's rec's haven't worked yet.

DD had what we think was a stomach virus last week (fever and vomit) that lasted 3 days. Called the ped during that episode, they told us to get clear liquids in her and it would pass. We did that as best we could and she got better. We brought her to daycare this week after being out last, and she was fine until Wednesday evening.

She was asleep from nearly the time we got home from daycare around 7pm until 11 when she woke up completely in a daze and began to throw up. Appeared to be only liquid and no solids that came up. We gave her a bath, and tried to get her back down, but she couldn't. She started to root, so I offered and she nursed for a short time, falling asleep mid-feeding. We put her in her crib and she STTN. When we got her up yesterday morning, we realized that she had vomited again at some point over night, so bathed her, and took her temp. No fever at all and she was her normal cheerful self. We kept her home, and I nursed her before I went to work (DH stayed home with her).

She was fine while I was gone, and so when I got home early to relieve DH around 2pm, I nursed her and we both took at 2 hr nap. When she woke up, she was hungry, so nursed again around 430. At 7, she started to heave and up came whatever she had in her stomach. We called the ped emerg line and they said to just keep nursing her, that the BM would be best and as long as she was having wet diapers, she was ok. They said they didn't think it was a food alergy b/c there was no blood and her stools were normal.

I nursed her again around 1030 and sure enough at midnight, it all came up again. She fell into a restless sleep, and at 430, was practically begging for milk and I gave in, and at 615, she lost it all. She's now had more baths in the last 40 hrs than she's ever had in a similar period of time. All the while, happy and no fever.

We've given her nothing since the last feeding at 430 and have tried to have her take some water with pedialyte. She's not taking it in any large quantities though, just sort of lapping at it from the cup.

Should we try to give her any solids? Should I withhold and not nurse, or nurse her even if she's only going to throw it all up again? If this is the second go-around of the virus, we're in theory half way finished, but I feel so helpless. I don't want to withhold any food but I also don't want her to lose it all.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys have. If this continues beyond tomorrow, we're bringing her in to see the ped, but I want to try to make her as comfortable as we can until this stops.

TIA.

i just went through this with my boys.. it was so awful

when i called my ped.. i talked to the nurse and she told me no milk while they are still vomitting..
so after 2 hours if still no vomit, to give them pedialyte or gatorade.. so thats what i did.
they threw that up. so i waited again for another 2 hours. gave them gatorade and they held that.. didn't throw up.
but they had lots of diahrrea.. and still its been 3 days and they can hold down the milk, but they have no desire to eat solid foods. its still not gone yet.

the milk just upsets their stomach even more. they hated the pedialyte so gatorade worked for us

good luck, i hope she gets better soon.

I don't know. That seems like a long time to be vomiting...could she have rotovirus? I am not an expert since one of my sons has never thrown up(at 2.5) and the other has only thrown up from a reaction to antibiotic

when my kids had it we stuck to clear liquids for a little while. ped suggested it b/c they are easier on the stomach. water, peadialite, gatorade etc.

but in very small quantities at first. for us, this was key. literally a teaspoon at a time if they held that down for 30-45mins they could have another small amount.
hope she feels better soon!!!

Thanks everyone. I hadn't thought of Gatorade, so I'll pick some up on the way home.

Melissa--don't think so, only b/c she has not had diarrhea. Some of the other infants in the adjoining room were also sick last week, but DD is the only one who has been sick this week.
