Need Serious nap help ASAP!
DS is 9mo. He was never a good napper. He used to nap about 1-2 hrs in the morning and then maybe a 45 min afternoon nap, or none at all. His naps have slowly gotten shorter and now I'm lucky if he sleeps 30 min all day, forget about 2 naps. Sometimes it's even 15 min, not even long enough for me to take a shower and get dressed.
And it's not like he wakes up and chills out in his crib. He cries until I pick him up. And forget if I try to get him to go back to sleep. He screams bloody murder, arches his back and keeps standing up in the crib.
He's a great nighttime sleeper, which I am very thankful for. He sleeps for about 10-11 hrs. And I know he can put himself back to sleep cuz he wakes up often at night an goes back to sleep on his own. But last night he screamed at the top of his lungs and kept standing up for an hour, where DH finally had to rock him to sleep. at my wits end, please help!

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
sounds like he's overtired. At 9 months, technically he shouldn't still be waking up at night. If he's waking at night, it's because he's not getting enough sleep during the day.
what is his schedule? I bet his schedule needs some tweaking? If you let me know what it's like, i can help you.
ETA: i've been there. My son was the worst sleeper, but it was because he was so overtired all the time (which was not his fault- long story to that one ). So i know how you feel.

He sleeps great at nite, except for the occasional scream-fest when he goes down.
But he usually wakes in the morning at around 700. Then he nurses, has breakfast and nurses again at around 1130 or 1200 and falls asleep. The he is usually awake 15-30 min later. I can tell he is tired before 1130, but if I try to put him down, he screams as soon as he sees the crib and he won't stop. He'll go on for an hour.
I used to be able to put him down once in the morning and once in the evening while he was awake and he would put himself to sleep. Now I can only get him to sleep in his crib if he falls asleep nursing or in my arms. Then usually as soon as I lean over the crib to put him in, he wakes up screaming.

I think he may be overtired as well. I would think that if he gets up by 7 then by 9am he is prob. ready to go down for a nap. My boys are 12 months now and they are usually ready to go down for their first nap about 2-2.5 hrs. after they wake.

As I've posted many times before, and will continue to suggest "Healthy Sleep Habits - Happy Child"
This book worked wonders for us. I can't recommend it highly enough.
It does sound to me like he could be overtired. The book has great solutions that suprisingly work. We used an uber early bedtime for a few days after a tough run of late bed times and missed naps and it set DD right on track for great naps and nighttime sleep.

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
7 until 11:30am is way too long for a 9 month old. Well for most 9 month olds anyway. I think at that age, my son could only stay awake 2 hours after waking before his naps. He was on 2 naps a day, each nap almost 2 hours.
I would aim for him going down around 9:30am until 11am. Then put him down again around 1:30 (hopefully until 3/3:30pm).
I know he screams or cries, but that is because you're waiting too long to put him down so he fights it more. Try putting him down before he gets way too tired.
It may take a few days or a week, but i guarantee you his naps are the problem and that should help!
Let us know how it goes!
ETA: he should be getting about 14 hours of sleep total between nighttime sleep and naps.

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
I would try putting him down for the morning nap earlier. I made this mistake with DS, and had the worst time getting him to nap. I think we wound up moving it to 9:30 am and he did sooo much better. Start moving the nap up 20 minutes earlier every couple days, and I think you'll see an improvement.
Do you think he's having separation anxiety also? That can appear around 9-10 months and a good sleeper may suddenly need Mom or Dad to soothe them to sleep again.
Good luck!

This is what DD has been doing for the past few months. EVery once in a while a cold or something will throw her naps off but this is great advice. good luck!!

When his naps first started getting shorter about a month or so ago, he WAS napping 2-2.5 hrs after waking and having no problems. But then it all went downhill. Then my mother suggested that since he was getting older, maybe he was needing to stay up longer, so it slowly evolved trying to get his timing right.
I do think he is having some serious separation anxiety too. Every time I put him down to play or leave the room, or even turn my back to him, he starts to scream. That is why I think he won't go down for a nap no matter when I put him down.
I tried putting him down about 2.5 hrs after waking today and he started screaming before his body even touched the mattress.

how long was it downhill before you changed it though? he could have just been going through a phase or teething, etc.
so do you let him cry? for how long? I do know that they're smart and if you put him in the crib and he cries... if you take him out, he's going to keep doing that because he'll know that you're going to pick him right back up.

I'm gonna say it was about 3 wks or so before I started messing with the time.
And yes I do let him cry. It's not just like he lays there and cries though. I wish I had video of it. It's like this blood curdling scream where the neighbors probably think I'm torturing him. And he won't let up at all, it just gets louder and he gives no indication of stopping any time soon. I've let him go an hour before I pick him up. I don't feel comfortable letting him scream like that any longer than an hour. Also, he's not lying down this whole time, he's standing at the side of the crib and chewing on the rail. I had to get rail covers.

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
I have no advice for you because DS does the exact same thing. He is 7 months, sleeps about 12 hours at night (which I am completely thrilled about) but will take make a 15-20 minute cat nap in the mid-morning and then that's it for the day.

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
DD is 15 months and still goes down 2 hours after waking for her first nap. She sleeps at night about 12-13 hours...wakes at 7ish, down at 9. Then for her second nap its 3 hours after waking from first. She always goes down at night at 6:30-7. Even if she wakes from 2nd nap at 5, shes still down at 6:30. Like others suggested, healthy sleep habits suggested that schedule. However I will say the book is very wordy and that was the best piece of advice I got from it. GL

Re: Need Serious nap help ASAP!
I second getting Healthy Sleep HAbits Healthy CHild. He definitely sounds overtired...and sleep brings sleep! So the more sleep he gets the more he will sleep. For example, my 13 mth old goes to sleep at 6pm and usually sleeps till 6:30 am. If I put her to bed later, like 7:30, she'll wake up at 5:30 am.
For naps, she gets up at 6:30 and is down NO LATER than 9am. Any later than that is a sh*t show (like you've described). Try the early time. I bet it works!
