Need opinions please
My DH and I want to bring our dog, a Bichon Mix 15lbs, to obedience training and im having an issue
Most places use the choke collar as the training method. When we got our dog the shelter said not to use a collar on him but a harness instead b/c small frame dogs have small tracheas and you can cause injury. My vet recently said the same thing to me.
Has anyone had experience with this?
Does anyone know of a training place that uses alternate methods?
TIA

Re: Need opinions please
A choke collar or a prong collar? There are big differences. From what I understand, prongs merely pinch the skin and don't harm the muscles, tendons or trachea. I really don't know if it's ok with small dogs, but I do know that the prong collar has to be fitted properly to be effective.

I don't have experience, but I would think if you find a reputable place for training, they would know not to use methods that could cause injury to a dog.

Re: Need opinions please
we have a great trainer - Beyondpetsittingny.com.... your dog may be able to train with a flat collar depending on its temperment.

One of the places emailed me:
This is the email i received from one of the training facilities:
In 35 years we have never had any dog suffer any injury due to the use of choke collars. And your dog is most likely far more intelligent than dogs 10 times his size so the use of corrections is generally limited. However, obedience, which is the goal of our training, can only be achieved through the use of corrections to create or stop any action. Anything short of corrections to create compliance results in training, not obedience and training is no guarantee that your dog will consistently obey you.
I am not really fond of this method but on bigger dogs it doesnt seem as much of a risk of injury as smaller dogs.

Re: Need opinions please
what kind of issues are you having with your dog? we use best friends training and they use shock collars but its a good thing. choke collars on a small dog kinda makes me thats mostly for bigger, stronger dogs that pull

We wanted to teach him basic obedience commands and also control his jumping on people and his barking.

Re: Need opinions please
Please don't bring your dog to any trainer that uses a choke collar. Your vet is right about the damage it can cause. These small dogs can get collapsed tracheae very easily. My mom has a Maltese that has this problem now and it is HORRIBLE.

Thank you - i was starting to think i was being over protective. I know it wasnt an option i wanted to got with. I just cant believe how hard it is to find places that train with other methods.

Re: Need opinions please
In my opinion when training the best lead is on that loops inside itself. It is a short rope like lead. It goes around the head and you can tighten it at the back of the neck. We call it the goat rope, b/c it looks like what you would use on a goat.

This is what our trainer used on Layla. And, it was positioned higher up on her neck, behind her ears.
