Need help! Wording for an employee appraisal..
Wonderful person, but often will speak as if he owns the joint.
I need to put this in some sort of sentence that will get the point across in a business-like manner.
Can you help???

Hmmm... does he do/promise things he shouldn't? "Needs to be mindful of chain of command"? I'm just not sure what exactly you mean by speaks like he owns the joint.

so just very haughty? or thinking he always knows what is right? does it impact his relationships with his coworkers?
Maybe something like "While John is generally a wonderful employee and an asset to the company, it would be helpful for him to be mindful of his tone when speaking to colleagues."

YES! like he says "my" and "Mine" when regarding company stuff. do you know what i mean? it's like he owns the joint!
it comes across as annoying for his co-workers than it is "wrong."

Need help! Wording for an employee appraisal..
is that really something that deserves to be in the performance appraisal? have you spoken to him about this at all yet?
IMHO everything in the performance appraisal should be something that the employee has received feedback on already informally.
Also, to me, Im not sure I'm following the "my company" stuff. where I work is "my company". is he talking down to other employees? this sort of thing is either something that is annoying or a MAJOR problem.

I agree.
Everything that is assigned to me (computer/laptop/phone/office) from my company I refer to as mine. Sure, I know it's not really mine as in I don't own it, but it's assigned to just me and not shared. If this is what you're talking about then I think this is minor and shouldn't be brought up on a performance appraisal.
Also, it is good for people to feel that the company is partly theirs. They're more invested. Most of the time that's better than the F-them attitude.
Now, if he's playing boss and giving people orders when he shouldn't that's another thing. In that case I would be sure to give specifics when talking about how it is not appropriate.

Re: Need help! Wording for an employee appraisal..
John Smith needs to improve on his overall self-monitoring and/or self-awareness around customers and colleagues.
Then list a few examples.
Also is it like a cocky-attitude kind of thing?
I've worked with a few males like this so I totally get what you're saying and understand your challenge in phrasing it.
This is why it's generally best to have a conversation in advance of review time.
Some people may even surprise you and ask you to point it out when they are doing it (in a nice or joking way).

I agree, I think in order for it to be included in his performance review it should have atleast been brought to his attention that it was an issue before hand. This way it gives him a chance to actually improve.

Thank you! this is great!
And, yes, he is fully aware of this already. he was spoken to by the VP.
