Need Decor Help with pics

I recently asked about shelving/ledges for my living room but I'm not sure if I should go with ledges, shelving or a piece of furniture - like a leaning bookshelf OR should I just leave the wall as is??

My living-dining room has ZERO personalization as far as pictures go. I don't have a sideboard or end table to display framed photos on and I have one NAKED wall that is pretty large. I'm just afraid of it looking cluttered or being tight to walk past...but right now the room feels a little sterile - like you don't know who lives in the house (that is what DH says!)Chat Icon

Any ideas? I don't want to do the gallery style b/c I did that already in my den/office and I don't want that many photos - just enough space to have room for us, our dog, parents, grandparents and one day hopefully a
Chat Icon Chat Icon maybe a small plant..

This is the wall (dining table to left and couch to the right):

This is from dining room side:

These are from the couch:

This is looking down from the living room:

This is an old picture but shows the decor I have above the couch and lamp.

Basically it's the only blank space left...so should it stay blank?

I need helpChat Icon

Thanks!

Re: Need Decor Help with pics

Also I'd like to add that one day I want to get an armoire for the TV - that is the big reason I am afraid it will look cluttered b/c of the TV console being so close...but if it were an armoire I don't think it would so busy....

Nik, you have a beautiful home! What about a bar cabinet? Crate and Barrel has a nice one that isn't too big. As far as photos, maybe you can display one or two framed ones on top of the bar, maybe of places you have travelled or on the wall above?

The only thing is, if you put a piece of furniture there can the rug be moved? It looks like now if you put anything there it would be half on-half off the rug.

Re: Need Decor Help with pics

I think a plant would fill that spot nice. I have a palm in our living room and we love it! Very little maintenance. Or you could do a mirror? Not sure if you want to add another one though or even another wall decoration with leaves in it.

ugh that damn rug Chat Icon i am actually getting a new rug soon (well i hope! i have been eyeing a rug from PB and i have to decide soon before the sale is over!)....the rug in there now is 8x10 - i am getting a 9x12 and laying it the opposite direction. i want to lay it so that it ends where that wall ends - dividing the larger half of the room as the "living area" and then just enough room around the table will be rug free and the "dining area"

i just feel like something in the room isn't right - the rug? that wall? i don't knowChat Icon

Re: Need Decor Help with pics

I wouldn't do shelves or any kind of table there. Even though you have a collage in the office (which looks awesome! I never saw that til today) I would do 4 framed prints/pics on that wall in a square pattern - 2 on top 2 below. Maybe choose prints with some earth tones and pops of color.

Oh and when you get a new tv unit, i'll take the old one!!! I love it. Chat Icon We need to tour eachothers homes in person one of these days...

ETA: Have you ever thought of putting in built-ins where the tv unit is now?

or

Take your pics and have them put in a custom matted frame from Michaels.
I had one frame with 3 matted openings that I put our engagement pics in hanging in the great room, I love it.

I recently bought a ladder shelf and they stick out pretty far so it wouldnt leave much room.

i like both of those suggestions!!

maybe i'll do 4 frames like jess suggested but maybe 2 of the mats can be cut to have more than 1 photo? kim can you post a picture of the frame you had made at Michaels?

i really would like to do something with photos b/c i want the room to feel more cozy/personalized...i have 0 family pictures - just in my office! and we've been here over a year already!

we bought that TV console as a temporary - i like it but i really wanted to get an armoire (so i can close it and keep the downstairs living room more formal but still have the option for TV) but they were so expensive and we needed something ASAP.

i LOVE built ins - but i wouldn't know where to start with that! Chat Icon

I would pick the photos first. I found this pic on my work comp. It will do for now. The Michaels pic is the large one in the center. It cost around $200.00 with the 50% coupon they advertise monthly.

God this pic is so old! Things look different! Dont even own that furniture anymore!

Re: Need Decor Help with pics

what about just hanging some nicely framed wedding pictures??? seems the perfect space to make it more homey.

I see what you mean about it being sterile... kind of like cold... not like cold cold though. But just because you need some personalization... like a wedding pic. or a collage of pics
Not that your home isn't gorgeous... because it really is!!! It's like magazine ish.... but I'd add some personal pics around... show the times you have spent together.
