Need Carpet 101 help

The last thing we need to get is carpet in all the bedrooms for my house to be done!

I am clueless and don't know where to begin or look. Since this is the last thing we need we have little budget for 4 bedrooms plus a playroom.

Please teach me about what to look for in a carpet, best value, best install and nylon vs poly vs silk. What about twist? and weight?

We just went to HD and prices varied from $8 a yard to $50 a yard. I did like the $139 for whole house installation though.

TIA!!

Re: Need Carpet 101 help

I got the SmartStrand carpet from the Mohawk brand at HD. It's corn-based, so it's better for the environment, much less harmful chemicals off-gassing into the house. Because of the manufacturing process, it's naturally stain-resistant, unlike other types that have treatments applied to the carpet, which wear off, especially after steam-cleaning.
It comes in tons of styles and colors as well, so you aren't limited by the material.

We went with a relatively short cut-pile carpet for the house. I like the feel of the cut fibers, as opposed to a berber style. I also didn't want too much directionality in the strands (I didn't want to see every footprint made on the carpet).

Thanks for replying. That sounds like it would be ideal. What is the relative cost per yard?

It varies almost as much as "regular" carpet. At HD, they have a display, and the prices are on the back of each sample.
